rimmed vs. shouldered cartridges and accuracy
« on: January 09, 2008, 11:00:13 AM »
Okay correct me if I'm wrong. So far it looks as if it is easier to obtain good accuracy(1-2"@ 100 yards in a hunting round) from a rimmed cartridge verses a shouldered cartridge from a handi-rifle. I'm going to send my S&W 500 magnum in soon for a check up before I do anything else to it to obtain acceptable accuracy (if that's possible). I'd like to get a 45/70 barrel (to replace the 500 in case it don't work out. NEF will not replace the 500 with the 45/70) and a 30 caliber chambered barrel. I have 308 BR dies and brass which makes me lean towards the 308 barrel but if I'm right on this I'll choose the 30/30. I also have standard 270 dies and brass for what it's worth. What are your observations regarding this. Thank you in advance for your interest and comments.

I absolutely recommend both the 45-70 and the 30-30.
See if you can replace that .500 barrel with a 45-70 and have a 30-30 barrel fitted at the same time.
I have both 45-70 and 30-30 Handi's and I wouldn't get rid of either one of them!!
They are both VERY accurate. My 30-30 will shoot honest 1" groups with factory ammo. and a 4x Weaver.
My 45-70 will put shots touching at 50 yds. with the open sights.
Ask anyone on this site and they will most likely agree with me.
You absolutely can not go wrong with the 45-70 or 30-30!!

I believe it's more the fact that rimmed cartridges operate at lower "Handi friendly" pressures than rimless, but I've not had any problems getting very acceptable to excellent accuracy in either of them. A lot of Handi owners will say they like rimmed rounds better, but a lot of the reason for that is because of the lower pressures, they weren't a problem due to sticking brass,  which is a moot point with an extractor,  and also for an ejector with a good chamber and mild to moderate loads, too hot loads may still be a problem tho.

Best shooter I own is a .223 heavy barrel... shooting .556 Mil-surp, no less!
