20" vs 24" 45-70 bbl
« on: January 05, 2008, 06:42:15 AM »
I've got a new ProHunter 209x50 that "needs" a SS 45-70 barrel to go along with it. I may do some Canadian Black Bear hunting with it and who knows what else. Maybe I don't really "need" one", but will be ordering one anyway. I can't decide whether to get the 20" Khatadin bbl or the Encore SS 24" barrel. For whatever it's worth, I reload all of my ammo.

What do you guys think?

Get the 24 inch barrel; in an Encore, the rifle will still be fairly compact and it should get you an extra 100 to 150 fps.

Just thought of another question - If I order the 24" SS Encore barrel, can I still use a ProHunter forearm or do I have to order an Encore forearm?

The forearms are all interchangeable. You can use the standard forearm.

True, the Pro Hunter forearms are interchangeable with the standard Encore forearms, but there are several contours in each style.  For example, the 24" barrels take a different forearm than the 26" barrels (but the 28" Pro Hunter barrels take the same forearm as the 26" standard encore barrels).  And unless I'm mistaken, the ML forearms are different yet (ad I have no idea about the shotgun barrel forearms...)

I have used the same forearm with both the standard and bull barrels, no problem.  Muzzle-loader barrels/forearms are different.
I aim to please - but often miss.

24 and 26in barrel forearms are the same. Shotgun barrels have their own forearms and same with the Kahdiden barrels.

I have some Velcro and it has adhesive on the outside and I put it on the barrel and my forearm and I use it on some guns because I have too many barrels. It makes it easier to interchange the barrels. You also don't have to worry about the forearm screw torque and it saves you about $30 a forearm. Try it. ;)

OK - I think I'll order the 24" SS 45-70 barrel. I assume that it is a heavy (or large diameter) barrel. http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/item.asp?sku=000314995

They show this forearm, which looks like it is for the Encore rather than the ProHunter. http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/item.asp?sku=000307708

Can I get a ProHunter forearm for this Encore bbl?

**By the way - how are these prices?

Get that forearm. The prices are the best. I can get that barrel for $300 at the gun shop and the forearm for $30. By the way the forearm is in low stock.

30-06man , unless they have changed, the 24" barrel is a std contour barrel. Not a heavy barrel. Why I don't know. It makes no sense to me but when I bought mine it was all you could get unless you went custom. If I were to do it over I would get the 20" Khatadin ported barrel. That light barrel will just kick you to death.   KN

The last one I bought said for all 24 and 26inch barrels. I don't own any bull barrel encores and probably never will. Thanks for correcting me on that.

I think that you're correct about this. However, T/C shows a 24" SS 45-70 G2 barrel without sights. Any reason to not use a G2 barrel on my ProHunter?

G2 is NOT an Encore. Its a G2 Contender. It will not fit an encore. The G2 is the newest version of the contender and its smaller than the Encore.

If you buy the Kahtadin 45/70 it takes the muzzle loader forend No. 7514 (compsosite). It is best to contact the catalog or TC before ordering forends. Easy to screw up and non of it makes a lot sense. But, it makes TC a lot money selling several different types of forends instead of a few standard one size fits all per category.
