Load levels
« on: December 25, 2008, 08:12:24 AM »
First off let me say I don't shoot in this activity but enjoy shooting SA revolvers and Lever guns.  Just wonder why power levels aren't held to the original levels for that particular cartridge that is being used?  What is being used is a far cry from the original load levels.  I know it's for speed, but wouldn't it be more even if all had to meet a certain power level?  DP

A very complicated and thorny issue.  Unfortunately, the two camps have not resolved the debate.  If you wish to load to full service levels, or more, you can follow that group of shooters calling themselves WARTHOGS!

Most afficionados of the TRUE and origional gunpowder, usually load up to the old service levels.

"Smokeless is just a fad!"  Quote from Steve Garbe, I think.

I burn alot of Black in my muzzleloaders, All traditional sidelocks, but for cartridge guns I stick with smokless.  When the kids and I go shooting it would take 2 days to tear everything down to clean them up with black.  Guess I'm a little (lot) lazy.  I play with alot of the earlier cartridges, 38-55, 45-70, 45 colt ect. but load to at least the original speed or more.  DP

Cleaning a traditionally designed single shot rifle or shotgun, including a double, is as easy as running a few patches through the bore with your preferred BP solvent, followed by a quick wipe of the breach, Dry & lube and put it away.

Revolvers & repeaters are a bit more intricate, but still not a problem.  Even then, I cut the baby, practice with smokeless, and compete with the real stuff.

This is one of the most debated topics in SASS. The max levels approximate the old loads, but the mins are not regulated. I have seen gamer loads where the bullet hits the ground before it gets
to the target.  ;D
