45-70 & Barnes TSX
« on: January 14, 2008, 11:57:48 AM »
Pardon my whining here..... I just don't reload bullets I do not cast and have my powders almost down to three types. My son got me some 250 gr. Barnes TSX for the 45-70 BC H&R and a bunch of pulled jacketed bullets for my .308.
I want to use rifle powder for both of them, thinking 2400 will not do the TSX bullets justice and I do not want to even try a pistol powder to get pressures strong enough to cycle my Saiga .308. (the 2400 loads are fun to shoot but do not cycle gun)

I am looking for suggestions for a powder that will work well for both if there is one. I am also a bit miffed I can not find load data in 45-70 for these Barnes 250gr. bullets and am resistant to buy a manual from Barnes just for one load. I will not be buying more of these. Any help will be appreciated.

I've had good accuracy with H4198 in H&R 45-70s at top levergun levels with several bullets, Realguns list 250gr X bullet data which is what Barnes will tell you to use, or they may have specific data for them if you ask, email them and they'll send it to ya if they have it. The Barnes #3 shows XMR 2015, Rl7, H4198(recommended), H322, H4895, IMR3031, IMR4895 and IMR4064 for the 250gr XFN. Alliant shows Rl7 loads for both rounds.

FWIW, I've also got significant velocity increases in the 32" BC barrel over the 22" Handi barrels using H322 and IMR4198, 150-200fps more with 350gr bullets.

Oh yea, guess I will try using IMR4895. That is the current recommended load for the XFN,which is the TSXFN recommended load chart. It will also work in my .308 blammer and .204 Ruger when i get to it. Thanks for waking me up Tim.
