plastic stocks
« on: January 20, 2008, 11:07:23 AM »
Does anybody know of a way to fill in the hollow spaces  of a plastic stock so that it feels and sounds more solid like a wood one? Without adding too much weight to the gun.

I was gonna try some great stuff. Im thinking about putting a PVC pipe in to the stock bolt. Then filling spaces with great stuff
I need to find out if a 9/16 socket will fit  thru the pipe first. If it didnt work, it wouldnt take too much to scrape the stuff out
I dont care what gun Im using as long as Im hunting

I thought  of doing that  and I like your idea with the PVC pipe to protect the stock bolt.

I've stuffed em with packing peanuts before, just keep compressing them until you can't get any more in, kinda messy to dig out, but it works. I've used expanding foam on regular hollow stocks, it should work fine on an H&R if you use the PVC pipe to access the bolt. ;)

Savage just cuts a piece of Styrofoam the approximate size and shape of the inside of the stock and shoves it in. It seems to work pretty well for deadening the noise of branches and such scraping on the stock. Maybe a combination of Styrofoam and Great Stuff would work best. If you use the Great Stuff just do a little at a time and leave plenty of time for it to expand. It does expand for quite some time after it's filled. I learned that the hard way! LOL

Me too! :-[  The first time I used it was to insulate a cheap cooler for bait, I filled the hollow lid with expanding foam, then sealed the hole with duct tape and put some weight on it. It expanded the lid from about 1" thick to about 3½", way too much to fit on the cooler. :o :'( Another time I used it on a CVA muzzleloader stock, filled it about half way and put the recoil pad on, it still oozed out from under the pad and bulged it out slightly. :-\  So use it with caution.

I used great stuff, and it outgassed and turned my stock a gray color. i ended up having to paint my stock flat black to fix it.
i dont know why it happened, no one else has complained of this , but its something to keep in mind, but it did work for cutting down that hollow sound

I have not tried it in a stock, but DAP makes a latex expanding foam called DAPtex.  It cleans up with water, and doesn't have the polyester solvents in it like great stuff.  It shouldn't cause discoloration.
