Tight Bore w/TC Omega Z5 and TC Mag Express Sabots
« on: November 17, 2007, 04:35:18 PM »
Is this common? Are there different (thinner) Sabots I can get to replace the ones supplied with the bullets? I'm using the 50 cal 300 gr bullets. By the way, I practice shoot, wet patch, dry patch, repeat, so I'm sure that a dirty bore is not the problem.

It starts fine but a couple inches in they get quite tight requiring quite a very hard push to to seat in the barrel. Is this enough info for an answer?

TIA
Dave

You can get different sabots by contacting MMP sabots.  Yes, this is a common problem.  I have an Omega that it is impossible to seat 250gr Shockwaves in...without a hammer.  Only did that once.

Yes it is! I use a light coating of Bore Butter, and a little dab on the sabot. It makes load easy! ;D

Thanks for the replies. I'll be getting some different sabots for the long term. For this season I'll try lubing them.

only use a tiny amount of lube in case you dont fire it for a while, since you wouldnt want it to make your powder moist

Dave, I left the Bore Butter in my gun,and loaded it for opening day. 2 1/2 days later I got a shot, and it went off without any problems, unless you were the buck! ;D Bore Butter is non fouling, just a light coating in the bore, and a dab on the sabot and your good to go! Ron

Hornady sells a new sabot and 250 grain SST bullet combination called the "Low Drag."  It loads very easily in my Encore but is not as accurate as the old tight fitting sabots.

i love those tight fitting sabots with the 250 grain SST bullets:  With a 2" furniture knob on the end of that stout Encore ramrod it is going to go down the barrel.

alsaqr, that has been my experience too! The loose fitting sabots(or easy loading) gave poor accuracy. With a little lube they (the tight fitting) sabots shoot great, and load easy to boot! ;D Ron

Lubing at the range is doable but it sounds kind of cumbersome in the field. I've got some new sabots on the way. If the accuracy is not there I'll try lubing. If you've got some great pointers to make it easy in the field, I'm all ears.

TIA

When hunting I always have 3 or 4 quick-loaders in my pouch, with the powder and bullet/sabot ready to go. I lube the sabot with some bore butter before I put it into the quick-loader. There seems to be enough still on it when it goes into the barrel that it slides in ok.
