.22 Hornet Reloading
« on: March 24, 2008, 05:15:59 PM »
I just bought a .22 Hornet in a H&R Handi rifle and am looking for a few pointers on reloading for it.

My sources for the Hornet list both .223 and .224 bullets.  I hope that I am not going to have to "slug" the barrel to determine the bore size.  Is there some other guideline that I am unaware of.

Also, does anyone have any idea of how many reloads that I should be able to expect out of my cases?  One post that I saw mentioned something about the cases not surviving very long.

Any information that anyone has on reloading this round for this rifle would be very much appreciated.  The prefix on my rifle is HK if that helps.

All modern American 22 Hornet barrels take .224 bullets. There are some European rifles that still take a .223 Bullet. CZ comes to mind, I am sure there are others. Case life depends on your rifle chamber, action type and how hot your reloads are. In addition to that 22 Hornet cases are very thin when compared to other more modern high pressure cases. The case design does not lend it self well to long case life either. The long sloping shoulder lets the case grow considerably. I would imagine you will get any where from 2 to 5 loadings before the case becomes unusable. Depending on how hot you load for. Check the web area for head separation each time you reload. You may find you have to trim every time you reload too, those cases grow more than any other one I reload for; that is why they want to separate at the head, all that growth comes from right in front of the web. Some people have converted their 22 Hornets to a wild cat called 22 K-Hornet to get a sharper shoulder and less case growth. Not necessarily more velocity. Good Luck and good shooting.

Evidently you did not want a high velocity .22 rifle or you would not have bought the Hornet. Remember that when your loading. Work up a load for accuracy and not velocity. If you want to try it on coyote load 40 or 45 gn. bullets. For groundhogs and smaller game the liter bullets should work fine. Also if you get it to shooting well it make a 80 yrd. squirrel gun, just shoot them in the head.

Your gun should be .224. The best advice I can give you on loading for your hornet is LIL GUN. Many here agree it is great in a hornet.
99% of all Lawyers give the other 1% a bad name. What I find hilarious about this is they are such an arrogant bunch, that they all think they are in the 1%.

Just be careful resizing, thats where I crushed a couple.  Die not set, so my fault, not the hornet brass's.  I have the handi in 22Hornet also.  Never used Lil Gun.  I tried AA1680 and loved it!  Seems to do best toward the minimum load end of powder.  These lil buggers are so darn accurate.  You're gonna love it!!

I can recommend neck sizing iso full resize.
I neck size for my handi hornet with a lee collet die. No issues with collapsing the fragile brass and I haven't had any problems get them to chamber.
I am using Lil Gun and like so many others my handi hornet shoots better than I do.
My oldest Brass is on the 4th reload. So far so good.
