T/C slug barrel
« on: December 08, 2007, 01:41:03 PM »
I have an Encore with the mzl loader and .223 rem barrel's  I was wondering what kind of accuracy and what slugs the 12 ga slug barrels like....I just bought a new ultra slugger with a 1 in 35 twist.... The 20 guage has a 1 in 28 and throws the sst real well....My 12 has a 1 in 35 and doesnt like the fast sst.... But the Encore ad says it has a 1 in 28 twist....I am looking to put a 200 yd shotgun togrether......I know it sounds far fetched,,,,But I think it can be done....I havent given up on my ultra yet...But maybe I should have done more research    But I aint done yet....

Keep us posted. I tried the  hornady SST's in my Encore 12 slug gun and at 50 yds they were all over the place.

The 20 is the way to go I have one built buy TC custom shop with the SST's one ragged hole @ 100 yds
I will have to shoot it out to 200 to see what it will do, the 12 is no fun to shoot unless it's fired from a lead sled my friend had one
know he shoots a 20 like mine

You are not far-fetched in wanting a 200 yard slug gun. My hunting partner has a Savage bolt-action slug gun and the thing shoots bonified 2.5 inch, 3 shot groups at 200 yards. I have the 20g pro hunter slug barrel and I get about 3in groups at 100 with the new rem core lokt slugs. I think it will shoot better just havent had time to play around with different slugs too much yet.

I've got a SS 12 gauge barrel for limited edition with laminated stock. Saboted slugs were all over the map with it. Hastings Laser slug was one ragged hole at 50 yds. Came off bag like a rattle snake strike!!! I tolerate recoil but I got to tell you this was STOUT! So I purchased Pro Hunter stock set and was pleasantly surprised at recoil reduction. Shot nice and recoil was not "tolerable" for a slug gun. Basically no different than 870 with Hastings heavy barrel. I reload the SPW slug which is same as Hastings Laser and achieved same results. I had a Custom Shop 20 gauge barrel couple years ago and regret selling it to friend. I would like to try the Lasers in 20 gauge since I like their terminal performance. Bottom line is the 12 gauge barrel couldn't hit a 8x10 target at 50 yds with sabots but shot extremely well with full size sabots like Lasers and Lightfields. I am not sure why the 12 wouldn't group the various sabot's I tried but all were same on accuracy....not very good. Anybody have real good success with sabots in 12?

I have a 20 gauge NEF Ultra slug and I can get 3 holes touching at 100 yards using Win Surpreme.  I wanted to get a barrel for my Encore but am afraid I would not get the performance that I get out of the NEF

Other than for recoil reduction, what is the benefit of using the 20ga over the tradition 12ga?  I assume that the 12ga has a bigger payload at all ranges but I'm interested in hearing from those guys who really know.

Flatter shooting (better ballistic coefficient) and you can shoot 3 inch shells if you want more speed. The 20 ga. is a deer killing round for sure. The 12 benefits from improved brush busitng but the 20 is no wimp at busting brush.
