Lee Challenger O Press.
« on: January 17, 2008, 05:28:44 AM »
I just bought a Lee Challenger O Press from another member here. It has slight rust on the piston and you can feel it drag a little when it goes past the rusty part. Will it be ok to take some steel wool to it and then put some WD 40 on it with out doing any damage? I also have a Lee C press and the 3 die set from Lee for a 243. How would you set this system up using both press's to minimize changing dies? I have about everything I need now to start loading. I have a Lee hand primer on the way and just received the shell holder for it. I think I just need powder, primers and bullets and I will be ready to go. Thanks Dale

A little burnishing with 0000 steel wool ain't gonna hurt nothing. WD-40 would be good but I think I'd wipe the whole press down with a gun rag with some gun oil or 3-in-one oil. I think that would stay with you better. A touch of Kroil at any moving point ain't gonna hurt.
I've never used a C press but they supposedly will spring a bit under tension.  If that is true, I think I would set the O press up to deprime/resize and the C press up to seat bullets.  I like to seat my bullets part way and then give the cartridge a 180deg turn and then finish seating the bullet. (just one of the anal things I do) With the open front to the press, I would think manipulating the case and bullet would be easier.
Good luck.

The steel wool and the WD-40 worked great. ;D The piston slides very smooth now. Dale
