My Mag-na-port Custom Ruger is on the way back home.
« on: February 29, 2008, 05:18:21 AM »
I spoke with Kenny Kelley at Mag-na-port yesterday and my Ruger Super Single Six left yesterday via USPS heading back in my direction. Since I had it shipped for me by the gun shop where I bought it the gun will be returning there but I should be able to pick it up one day next week I think.

To rehash the story I bought a 9.5" Ruger Super Single Six Convertible to see what the chances are my tired old eyes could still shoot iron sights if that front sight was pushed far enough away from me. When I got it home I shot it fair to middling at best more due to the poor trigger than anything I felt. It seemed to want to group but the heavy long gritty trigger just would not let me prove it.

So I called up Kenny Kelley at Mag-na-port to see if I could convince him to work his magic on it and make it into the kinda trigger pull they do so well and asked about the chance we could make this a project gun for a product review. He liked the idea and had several other custom touches he wanted to apply while he had it in hand. I said go for it and shipped it off to him. That was a long time ago and to be honest I've forgotten just when it really was but I think maybe last November. It is finally completed and headed back my way.

I'm not even sure I know just what all Kenny did to the gun but in our conversation yesterday he mentioned it had a real problem he just hardly ever sees in that the gun just would not fully lock up with 2 or 3 chambers even with hammer all the way back so this took quite a bit of effort to fix but that he did manage to make it fully lock up tight with all chambers. From the way he talked he had never had one that bad before.

From our conversations about this in the early days I'm sure he also numbered the chambers, worked on the throats and barrel on both ends and put me a new patridge front sight on. Cosmetically he polished the trigger and hammer and applied some gold coloring to the grip frame and I think also the trigger and hammer.

If it sounds like I'm a bit fuzzy on exactly what he did that's because I am. I told him he had free rein to decide what he should do and to just make it happen and surprise me. Soon it will be here and I'll see just what all he did to surprise me.

Lloyd I dug around in the closet today and pulled out a box with a little Ruger Vaquero .32 Magnum in it. That little bugger is still unfired and I played around with it trying to decide just what the heck I'm gonna do with it.

It's really a nice looking little revolver. The grip is a bit short for my hand but the little finger fits well underneath and with no recoil to speak of that's not a bad way to grip one. I'm thinking it sure would look nice with a rear like Alan has mounted to your Bearcat but really until I shoot it I don't actually "know" for sure it won't hit to POA and the sight picture with it isn't bad other than it's too close to my eyes.

The white grips on it sure would look good with some scrimshaw work.

I'll be glad when it warms up again so I can get out more often and maybe shoot some of these things and decide what the heck to do with them.

Bill that would be one trick little sixshooter with a smith sight on it. I missed the deal buds gunshop had on them for 300 bucks. I was going to buy one and do the same thing to it. Even if it hits close to point of aim with the fixed sights its neat especially in a 32 to have ajustables so you can shoot real light loads and even 32 s&w longs and 12o grain full power mags.

Yup I figure if I think long and hard enough someone might come to mind.  ;D

But I jist gotta take it out and shoot it first.

My right eye has been so messed up the last week that even looking at the monitor is painful and it's hard to keep it open. I've got to stop rat now and get ready to go see the eye doctor to see if he can get me fixed back up so I can see things with it again.

Product review? Does that mean there will be an article of some kind? If so I would like very much to read it. I would like to see the pictures also.

And you are so right about their trigger jobs, I sent my srh in after reading the glowing reviews on this site and it now has an unbelievable trigger. They did a bunch of other stuff to it also and everything was top notch.

Might take longer to get around to this project than I expected.

It seems the problem with my right eye is more serious than I understood it to be. The first eye doctor I went to (an eye surgeon) really failed to explain to me just what was going on. He merely said I had an abrasion and it was infected and called it an ulcer. He gave me drops and said come back on Monday which I did.

At that visit he really showed his butt big time. I knew he was an unfriendly and unsocial type more suited to life as  a hermit than a doctor but it had never really mattered before. He just refused to discuss the situation with me or explain the seriousness. In fact he was quite rude at my even asking.

So I made an appointment with another today and he was most friendly and helpful and explained to me in detail the situation as he saw it. I've been on the drops the strongest available now for six days and he said that with it as bad as it is today (not know how it was originally) that he felt it imperative I see a corneal specialist immediately. He has me scheduled with the best in B'ham at 7:30 in the morning. Matt's real happy about that as he is my official driver for such trips.

In addition to the original abrasion I was told I had this doctor saw a couple of addition "lesions" as he called them radiating from it and all is infected. He feels this is an organic likely fungal infection that the drops I'm on will not kill. Only a corneal specialst he says can determine the extent of the damage and deal with this type infection.

So it seems I'm a long way from over and done with this eye problem and I still don't have a prognosis for the eventual outcome of it.

All projects are on hold until the eye is fixed if it's fixable. Prayers would be appreciated.

You can count on prayers from here Bill.  My right eye is nearly back to normal.  A year ago it started to bleed inside from a burst vessel in my retina.  It was supposed to clear up by its self, but needed surgery in September.  Now I can see clearly most of the time.

I learned that with a patch on the right eye I could shoot a pistol right handed, but shifted over to use the left eye.  I wasn't so lucky  with the rifles.

Take care and get well.

Glad to hear you found someone better to deal with. About two years ago my wife got laundry detergent in her eye and ended up with a corneal abrasion from the chemicals. It never got to the point of infection but it still bothers her sometimes. At first the problem was with dry eyes, at night it would try to heal and when she opened her eyes in the morning it would be stuck and tear back open when she opened her eye. Recurring corneal abrasion they called it. She did get better after a while and I'm sure it will just take some time.

Sorry but the computer didn't help her as the eye strain was really bothering her (her job requires her to be on the computer constantly). Anyway good luck and hope it all works out for you.

Good luck GB!  I'll add you to our prayer list.  Fortunately there is a lot of technology to help your cause.  As a diabetic I've had both eyes operated on and have been able to preserve my vision.  If it wasn't for the technological advances and God's help I'd be blind by now.

Hang in there!
