6.5x55 to 257 Robts

I have acquired a nice older 96 swedish mauser, sporterized with a well-done mannlicher stock.  20" Military barrel has been turned down, BOLD trigger installed - it shoots pretty good.

Question is what would it take to re-chamber this rifle to 257 Roberts?  I have another 6.5x55, and am looking for a bit of variety in my rifles.  Like this new little carbine set-up - would like it to be a 257, that's all.

As to a rechamber no. the 257 roberts bore is .257 the 6.5 is .264. You can rebarrel to 257 roberts as long as you only use the standard pressure ammo not the +P. All of course if you have an action that is oked by a gunsmith.

UMD:  at first blush it would appear that all is necessary is a re-barrel.  The overall cartridge length of the Roberts is shorter than the Swede so cartridge length and magazine length shouldn't be a problem.  The rifle is a M96, and a oldie.  Having one in 257 would make it a neat carbine with the 20" bbl.  JMTCW.  Mikey.

UMD that sounds like a great little rifle.  If you decide not to re-barrel it and get something different I'm sure I could find the address of an FFL in my area.   ;D ;D

Seriously though, that ought to be a dandy little rifle.
