ROADS
« on: January 16, 2008, 02:20:27 AM »
History has shown the building and maintenance of roads shows the state in which a nation is in !
In the USA we have bridges falling down and roads so pot holed its dangerous to travel some !
The news said some wish to add a 40 cent tax to gas to help fix the roads .
some might offer that all the illegal alien traffic is wearing out our roads ?
we are going in debt by the BILLIONS every year to help other countries !
Why can't we help ourselves ?
IS THERE ANYONE RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT THAT CAN OR WILL FIX THE ROADS ? COUNTRY ?????????
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

The gasoline tax the Fed's charge takes in more money than they are giving out.  Congress has been borrowing about $200,000,000 a year from the highway money to use for other things.  The money is there, it is not being spent for what it was originally taxed for.

It doesn't matter.  Point is the money is/was there and it isn't being spent correctly.  An extra 40 cents per gallon is ludicrous and unreasonable.  That extra cost in fuel will just be passed on to us as consumers of other products.   >:(

You are right, it is $200 billion within the last few years.  I heard this on a radio talk show, after the bridge collapse in Minneapolis.  They gutted social security, now they have gutted the highway money.  If they didn't gut Nasa back in the 70's, Von Braun had plans to go to Mars by 1986 and have a permanent colony on the moon with mining operations for platinum.  (The moon has platinum lying aroung on the surface.  The Apollo astronauts brought back some.  Carter gutted the military back in the 70's and Reagan had to restore it.  Bill did the same thing in the 90's.  Some things the govn't must do.  Social issues they cannot solve, no matter how much money they pour into it.  Science, research and development, always has paybacks.  Sorry for ranting.

"They gutted social security, and now they have gutted highway money."

It that "They" you referred to spelled Bush?  While I wasn't a great fan of Clinton, I have to admit when he left the White House there was a surplus of money both in the general fund and in social security.  GWB raped the funds to support his war efforts.  How many assistants could we have hired, and accomplished the same end, perhaps even getting Bin Laden with just a small portion of the money spent supporting the war?

I beg to differ with this accusation against Bush.  Social Security has been predicted for over 25 years to be in the shape it is in due the large retirees of baby boomers.  It is the liberal Demoncrats in 40 years of Congress that "borrowed" the funds meant for Social Security.  It just so happens that Social Security is still in the black, though expected to be in the red by 2018.  And Clinton did not have a surplus of money in the general fund.  The US was still in debt at that time.  If you are in debt, you do not have a surplus.  Due double digit economy from economic policies of a conservative government, Clinton benefited from a balanced budget approved by a Republican Congress with much opposition from the Demoncrats because of the reduced social benefits.  There are many things I disagree with about Bush, but he is much better than Slick Willy's best day or that of his conniving wife.  Slick Willy and Hitlery both had the same info that Bush had on 9/11 and his request for support to invade Iraq.  What did either of them do to prevent more American lives lost from terrorism, when you look at the Cole, 2 Embassies, and untold American murders abroad?  Talk.  I blame Clinton for not doing what was necessary to prevent terrorism on the home front or abroad and left Bush a diplomatic mess caused by him.
Greg lost his battle with cancer last week on April 2nd 2009. RIP Greg. We miss you.

let us not forget if the country does not go as far in debt as it was predicted to do , congress sees it as a surplus and looks for more ways to piss it away !

Social Security was never intended to be in place this long.  Thanks to the Dems and their liberal policies it has become a crutch for so many in this country.  Bush tried to help future generations by implementing programs to encourage individuals to invest in retirement programs that are not tied to social programs.  Now we have our government scrambling to pass an economic stimulus package - big surprise the Dems want to stuff it with extra food stamps and unemployment benefits.   :o ::)

Mr. Bush has had his fair share of screw ups, but given the circumstances I think he has done okay.  Deltecs did a good job of sumarizing everything.
