Andy Griffith show "The Cannon"
« on: June 04, 2009, 04:38:18 PM »
I was just watching that episode.  The carriage looks right - the bolts, rings, etc seem to be in the right place. The tube looks like some sort of howitzer.  Does anyone know if it was a real gun?  It looked to detailed to be a typical prop in a sitcom from the 1960s.

Sorry I didn't see it, anyone know how to get to it on the web?  Maybe someone bought the set of videotapes with the first 10,000 episodes for $9.95 and the next 10,000. free if you call within the 30 minutes?

I'm not sure if this is the same one. I believe this was from a different episode. Also, note the muzzle damage.

Yeah, that is a different episode.  That looks to be from mabye 1963.  The one I am asking about is from '65 and in color.  It has Warren in it.
But those photos you put up seem to have more things right than would be usual for the film industry back then.

And a few weeks ago I was talking with someone who was recently at Disneyland, and she said that the gun at Frontier Land is a Wiard Gun.  Orginal, but in poor condition.  Can anyone confirm or rebute this?

This gun (reportedlly a French Hotchkiss) is reportedly at Disneyland:

This gun is reportedly at the entrance to Frontierland:

There is also reportedly a cannon on the ship Columbia.

Great photos, thanks.  That second one does look like a Wiard, doesnt it?  The person who told me of it is a bit of an artillerist herself and said it looks to be an original, but didn't have time to really examine it.  I guess I will have to schedule a trip to D-land to check it out for myself.

The Mayberry cannon in photos above has a Navy ca. 1880 3-inch breechloadiing rifle carriage, from which the trail wheel has apparently been removed.

I have no idea what the barrel is-possibly something made up by the prop department when they were told a muzzleloading cannon was needed.

After 5 minutes I found out that that episode (#170, the cannon) (http://www.tvland.com/fullepisodes/andygriffith/) will be rebroadcast on Monday June 22, no time was specified. Check your TV schedule. None of my several sources go more than 14 days ahead on the time.

I was in Disneyland on holiday in March.  The Cannon in the town square is definitely a breech loading Hotchkiss.  I have a closeup photo of the name plate.  The cannon at Frontierland is on a Paulson Bros metal carriage but although I remember doing a couple of closeups of the breech end I cannot find it.  The memory I have is that it was also marked Hotchkiss, but cannot remember for sure.  I feel if it had been marked in any way as a Wiard I would have gotten very excited.  Either way the cannon is real and not a mock up.  The Columbia was closed to tourists the day I was there so I cannot confirm the existence of a cannon there.

Just an aside, another place in California that I found cannons that is not usually mentioned is the Hearst Castle.  I saw a 10 inch (approx) Bronze Spanish Mortar and a Bronze cannon, also Spanish, similar to the longer guns at the Presidio entrance to the Officer's Club.  The tour was really tight and I could not break away to take closeups though.

I must say I was disappointed with the lack of knowledge about their cannons displayed by National Parks personnel at the Presidio but the people at Fort Point turned out to be real enthusiasts and I spent a great afternoon with them exploring, measuring and photographing their cannons.  They were very proud of their exhibits and once I had demonstrated a genuine interest they could not do enough for me.  There is also a genuine historic cannon on display at Alcatraz.

Overall a great holiday with regular stops to look at cannons throughout.  If there is any interest I can show some of the photos.

kindest regards

The photo of the artillery piece at Frontier Land appears to show a Wiard.  Paulson Brothers have produced them.

Thanks for the update, Shooter2.
Another place to visit is Mare Island in Vallejo.  I havn't been there for a few years, but they had a nice array of guns in front of the commandants house.

Cannonmn,
Thanks for the info and the offer of more help.  I took quite a few photos of the Presidio Bronze cannons and a few measurements.  I did not mean to be overly critical, its just the people that were on duty the day I was there seemed uninterested in the cannons or any of their history actually.  It was a complete contrast with the National Parks personnel at Fort Point who really knew their facts and their material.

It was wet day so maybe they just wanted to stay inside.
