Comments on CVA Wolf (and questions)
« on: June 12, 2009, 05:31:59 PM »
I spent a few good hours with the Wolf at the range. It is an amazingly accurate and fun rifle. With 80 grains of 777 and TC Shockwave 250 grain sabot/bullets (the expensive yellow tips) it just shoots in a 1.5" hole at 50 yards. I did not have time to move to 100 yards. The trigger is nicer than i expected. It just breaks nicely without creep, i am guessing at about 4 pounds of pull.
The rod on this rifle is absolute junk. After 15 shots it's all scratched, bent, and useless. Any idea for a field replacement? Have in mind that this is an extendable rod. I already have a glass fiber rod, but i don't know how to fit it to the rifle, because it then ends up too short.
I also have a question about ballistics. If i have the rifle sighted dead on at 50 yards, what kind of POI will it have or should it have at 100, with 80 grains of powder and 250 grain shockwave bullets? I suppose velocity and energy are sufficient to kill deer at 100 yards?
Thanks

Yeah--the Wolf ram rod is kinda lame, compared to my Optima rod, but the Optima was a more expensive rifle.  I've not done any mods to my Wolf rod yet, but I have some ideas.  The easiest way to deal with the scratches might be to install heat shrink tubing on the rod.  Alternatively, one could probably refinish it or anodize it.   I'm also considering making the rod stiffer by filling it with epoxy filler--perhaps epoxy mixed with ground glass or flox.  It will be necessary to shove something down the inside of the tube to seal the threaded extension from the epoxy first.

Thompson Center sells a long F/G rod that you cut to length and press on a threaded end cap.  You can then hunt with brass extension in your pocket and just screw it in to make it longer for hunting applications.
