Which method do you use....raccoon!

Wanting to get the most bang for my buck.  Needing to get rid of a buttload of raccoons at the lease!  Normally get twenty or so at the deer feeder nightly....can't be good for turkey populations.  And the coyotes aren't eating them, or if they are they can't keep up with the supply!
Which trapping method would be best?

Live trap(box type w/closing door)
Leg hold(what size is best)


What type of baiting would work best for the type you pick?  Please explain.....

 Scott, A  #1 1/2 coil,is a good foothold trap to use.Cages also work fine,it depends on what you have or want to use. I use blackies shellfish bait(fatal attraction) and also a sweet bait(fur king)
 Lenon's muskrat lure is also a dandy coon taker.
 I like to give the animals a choice,so I alternate between sweet and shellfish.

You also can use body grips in size 160 if you dont have  animals you dont worry about uthanizing.  You also can use  the cage trap or  dogproof coon type  traps if you have canines around.     Coons  will eat just about anything and more coons around the more they are competive for food sources.  The  baits or lures  Boggy mentioned all work .  If you have cats around dont use fish  or meat baits.  Use sweet baits or  things like marshmellows  to catch raccoons and not felines... Figured if I'm going to do this, I might as well get started!
Picked up eight double jawed #1.5, metal tag plates, and some 14 gauge wire.  Already sat down tonight and 'adjusted' the triggers so they will be lighter triggers and they are also sitting flatter(almost even with the jaws).  Already have a trowel, gloves and dirt sifter.
As far as bait....figure I have plenty of 'targets'(raccoons) and they will all have a learning curve.  So I will be baiting with marsh mellow or maybe vanilla wafers until they get smart.  Then I get some crawfish!

Be an experiment for me getting started, but I'll be setting mostly around logs near my deer feeder.  Guess I'll figure the rest out as I go?!?!  Pelts aren't really worth more then 13 bucks(if I treat them), and a lot less if they are raw.  Probably use the meat from them to get some coyote trapping done.


Got to get started tomorrow, season here ends on Feb 17th!!  If anyone has anything else I should include before heading to the woods....let me know!  Please!!

 Scott,marshmallows and wafers ,are more a summertime bait.I would go with something that gives off a lot more odor.Be ot sweet or fishy.

Was thinking it would still smell pretty good?  Supposed to be 55*F here tomorrow...I am in Arkansas.

 Neither one is very odoriferous.You want something that reaches out a bit ,and grabs the nose.

#14 wire?? double it !!! coon are easy to catch,hard to hold!!i'd go with 12 gauge wire as a minumum!!!

All I could find was 14 gage....and I did double it.  Wanted to be sure as I'm borrowing a couple(7) traps from a guy that is already finished for the season.
