Glue on scope base
« on: January 06, 2008, 03:07:03 AM »
Hey guys, recently acquired a contender with a 44mag super 14" barrel on it with a Leupold base and rings combo. Removed the base to mount a straight weaver style base and the leupold appears to have some kind of thread locker on the screws and a glue bewteen the base and barrel. Never seen that before, is it common, is it necessary when mounting the weaver base? Thanks!

I guess it is up to you.  When I mount a scope I want it to stay put.  I carefully remove the burrs that nearly always exist on the gun's mounting holes and on the scope base.  I put release agent on the gun and use the same epoxy used for bedding an action under the base to remove any variations or possibility of rocking.  And I loctite the screws and make them tight.  When the bedding on the base has had a chance to set up I mount the rings and scope.  I normally shoot it a few times and retighten.  When I am sure nothing is going to move I take out the ring screws one at a time a loctite them.  Then I finish sighting in the gun.

If anything wiggles then your point of impact changes.  I can't count the number of scopes people have thought were trash that turned out to be a hasty mounting job that didn't stay put.

I use Acuraglas because I have some nearly all the time.  I think any epoxy would work, and car wax on the gun will allow release if you want to remove the base.

Just correct me if I'm wrong you say WAX the area under the scope mount put the bedding of choice in the area and be done with it
Correct ??  when time comes to remove the base. The release (ie: wax) should make the job easy and clean?? Wah-LA new looking barrel . Correct ???
One other thought other than accuglass you said

How bout just off the top of your head what would you use  if you had no accuglass and was close to a hardware store / home depot

  Thanks
I am about to start taking  my guns one by one and remount the scopes and bed them so I'll more than likely be posting more questions, that may seem to be old hat too most of you,,  hope no one gets annoyed

Car wax is commonly used to allow the epoxy to release in barrel bedding jobs.  Even if it doesn't a night in the freezer normally shrinks the metal enough so the epoxy pops off.

I guess I would use any of the hardware store epoxies and not be concerned.  In this case you are looking for something to fill the voids and get hard to prevent rocking, not for super bond strength.

Not everyone does this.  If you are fortunate enough to get a perfectly fitting mount then proper tightening and Loctite are all that is needed.  I just don't want to have trouble when I get the chance to hunt.  I am old school and won't take a shot unless I know where it is going to hit.  That requires well maintained guns and practice.  If the point of impact changes each time I shoot it drives me crazy.

Good luck to you.

Some may not remember this but back in '70-'71 when Steve Herrett came up with two of the most popular loads at that time for the Contender (.30 Herrett and .357 Herrett) he recommended that when putting a scope on the Contender that epoxy be used. In his instructions he said to put the base on and scribe the outline and then take emery cloth and take the bluing off  that area on the barrel and the bottom of the base. The epoxy was then applied to the barrel , the base fitted and secured and the remaining epoxy wiped off. This was supposed to secure the base and scope because of the high recoil  energy of the rounds. Just a little history! Don
