Am I wasting my time : 90 grain in .270
« on: January 22, 2008, 05:09:42 AM »
I have an Encore and just got my reloading kit. Am I wasting my time trying to find a load that will work with a 90 grain bullet. I bought powder/primers/bullets that my manual suggested, but what is the odds of finding one that will group well enough for varmints. I was using factory 130 grain loads that grouped great, but I wanted something smaller for varmints. I am still new to reloading and just dont want to waste my time/money if I dont stand a chance b/c of the 1:10 twist rate.  Or is this the case of every gun is different and you dont know until you try it?

Thanks guys!

I am new to reloading also but I see no reason you should not be able to get a 90 grain bullet to group from a 1 in 10 twist barrel. Like you said though you will never know till you try. Every barrel is different and what may work in one may not work in another. Dale

I have gotten excellent results with the Horandy 110 grain Vmax bullet. Very accurate and explosive on prairie dogs. I steered away from the 90 grainers because a lot of guys had bad luck with them and I wasn't in the mood to experiment.

HI spy231 90 gr sierra hollow points are just wicked on ground hogs. I got great results with them in a husqvarna 270 with 9.5 twist.
MY load was 59 grs. 4350 IMR it grouped right at inch. I loved blowing those chucks up with those little 90 grainers !  H380 powder work well with those bullets too.
