What can I expect from my Handi?
« on: January 22, 2008, 07:45:56 AM »
I bought a H&R .243 about 2 months ago.  I had ejection problems and after some work there by the folks at H&R and a change of ammo, it seems that the problem is gone.
I have been told that I can expect 2 inches at 100 with this rifle.  Is this correct? I would love to get 1 inch at a 100.  I am reloading and have not got the greatest results yet.  It seems like the H4350 is going to be a good powder and my next tests will concentrate on that powder.
I really like the simplicity of this platform and hope to add many barrels if the general accuracy is there.
I would appreciate any reloading tips?
Accuracy tips?

thank you

Yes typically you can get better than 2", 1" ish should be attainable, under 1" is a solid possibility.

Just to give Quick a break check out the sticky at the top of the forum, a required read for new folk

Welcome aboard toddx!! ;) If the 243 is the Superlight model with the 20" barrel, you'd be wise to keep the barrel cool so your groups don't get too big, it will heat up very fast, without fully bedding the forend, group size after the first 2 or 3 shots opens up considerably. As Aulrich said, spend some time in the FAQs, you'll find answers there that you don't even know you have questions for yet!! ;D

When I first got my .243 I was getting about 1 1/2 to 2" and that was after about 80 rounds looking for a brand manufactured ammo, and grain bullet that my rifle liked.

I finally polished the bore, and silicone bedded the forend, and now I'm getting about 3/4" to 1" groups at 100 yards.

Following the steps for accurizing in the FAQ's is the way to go, especially with the .243.

My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

Careful with the mods, take it slow and methodical.  I did not with my first handi and it cost me alot of time and money mucking about.

My next two I was far more controlled and they settled in right away.
