Range Report 1-19-08
« on: January 19, 2008, 03:15:59 PM »
Hit the range today. It was a bit windy today. Steady 10 mph with gusts
up to 20 at times. My Handi Hornet was it's usual deadly self.

This was the best group for the Hornet today, but with the wind it was averaging a little over
an inch at 100 yards. A lot better than my 17M2 was doing, that's for sure!
The real story today was my 223 bull barrel Handi. This rifle from day one has  been somewhat
of a challenge to find a powder and bullet combination that it likes. I think I have finally found it.

The Sierra 55gr Spitzer sp and 26 grains of BLC2. It seemed to be the most consistent load so
far. I still need to do some forend work, but I know I'm on the right track. I also know that I
need to get some better rings. Right now I'm using some cheap Leuopold Rifleman $16 jobs.
The old saying holds true, "You get what you pay for!" I'm looking at some Burris Signature Z's
or some Warne Maxima's.

Yes Sir Mr AZHoosier I certainly do! I just ordered 300 more Sierra 55gr Spitzers
and a set of Burris Sig Z's.

Looking good.   Nice job.

What problem are you having with the Leupold rings?

Yes, whats up with the Leupold rings? How did you trace a problem to them?....<><....:?

None of the expensive rings work any better than the Weaver rings.  They are all I use.

+1 on the weaver rings,I use medium rings on my handis and grind just enough off of hammer so it will clear the scope.Puts scope just right for me.Looks like you got both rifles dialed in pretty good!!

I agree, there is no coyote, fox, crow, woodchuck, or prairie dog that is going to argue with those guns at that distance the way they are shooting so far. Do you really think a $50 or $100 set of rings will tighten up those groups?....<><....:)

I have lapped the rings, cleaned them up, put them together using blue Loctite,
tightened them as tight as they will go, and still the scope moves. The cross hairs
go from straight up and down to looking like an "X". This even happens with my
22 LR and a couple of other rifles that I have them on. I have them on my Hornet
and they work fine. I just think I need something more solid. If your scope is moving
like that accuracy suffers big time. Not to mention it is frustrating as hell. I know
a lot of people here like the Burris Sig Z's, so I am going with them.

Nice shooting Robert, and good choice on the rings, at last count I had over 30 sets of Sig Zees. ;)

I've used every sort of cheap rings known to man, and I've never seen a scope turn in the rings even on a .45-70 with hot loads.

I've had scopes slide forward from recoil, but the only turning I've read about is the reticle inside the scope rotating, not the entire scope.  ???

The scopes are definitely rotating. I didn't even have to look close at
the turrets to see that. If it only happened on one, oh well. Two,
wait a minute. 3 or more, time to flush this turd!

A tiny dab of clear silicone sealant(RTV) between rings and scope will stop all movement in any direction.

"reticle inside the scope rotating"

Is quite common.

Hello SM Bob, Thanks for the range report. Both you're Hornet and 223 are shooting great.
About the Rifleman rings, Are they the vertically split rings or are they the standard type Rifleman rings?
I've been using the Vertically split Riflemans on some of my handguns and they have worked great. Just wondering which type is giving you trouble, thanks.

GOOD SHOOTING!

Slufoot,
Here they are.

Kurt,
No I didn't lap them too much. There is still plenty of gap on each side after they are tightened
down.

I put a set of riflemen rings on my 454 BFR for grins and chuckles.  Problem was I ended up being impressed!  It took over 75 rounds before I noticed a ring mark.  I gave a slight tightening on the rings and it has held fast for another 50 so far.  The scope is a Swift 4-32, can't break the darned things. ;D

If you got a Swift to hold together for more than a cylinder full, you're a mighty lucky man.
