encore : got the 308 barrel on it sighted in and ....
« on: January 21, 2008, 05:10:37 PM »
I started off with the 308 barrel and put a burris 2-7 on it, sighted in with six shots at 25 or so...two high, two low, two in the bull... moved to 100 yards and three shots fell into the six inch bull with extra room on the edges to spare...next morning : two bobcats came out one at a time in that fast cat walk they do... got both ! impressive power.... then at noon, I was going back to the stand to pick up the carcasses once finding out who wanted the gorgeous brown and gray skins... and ran across a meat doe en route... a shot through the top of the heart...freezer meat...
I had to put that thing away for conservation puposes.. lol...
it is hard for me to fathom the power of the rifle cartridges in the encore....
I am eager to sight in the 358 and the 460 due to the compensators... the game is lucky the season is over... but the predators ? I am not done with them yet...
I am ok to about a hundred yards easily enough... but longer than that will take more practice... what about you guys...?

I love my Encore hand gun, so compact and carryable. It can be pulled from its padded form fitting case, then deployed on target in seconds. Rides on the dash of my truck. Accurate out to 200 yards. 6.5x55.

Congrats Dan.  I haven't had any luck with deer this season.  I'm hoping to take one of them "meat" does soon.  What bullet weight did you use?

In the encore and the black rifle and the 788 Rem. I used the same bullet... the 165 grain Winchester power point... big hole... coming out about three to four inches wide out of the rib cage...
FWIW the black rifle shot one through both shoulders at 200 yds.... same result except traveled poorly off the clearing... and dropped ..
the bolt gun got no action.
bought the power points from wally world cheap ...

OK.... So tell me about the recoil of that gun. It's the one I want. Did you hunt with ear plugs? Is that an issue. Sounds like you handled the recoil just fine.

I truly found the recoil no problem at all... it pointed well too... the grip and balance are there for me, at least.... as to the noise... I cannot answer as I have this year started using hearing aids that compress all loud sounds to about the sound of a 22 at most... the 475 kicks much more... it is about like a mid range  44 mag at most but not quite the same... the gun and scope really eat up the recoil... it took a minute to get used to the fact that it was such a pussycat .. and the destructive power from a pistol was nothing short of amazing though I have owned many big game rifles and shot deer with them ... a rifle round like the 308 is head and shoulders above handgun rounds in terms of velocity range and destructive entry and exit wounds... it was a new experience to me.... my 35 rem in my contender seemed to kick more for some reason and made a fine hole.. but the 308 handles like a pistol and hits like a rifle... I still love my sixguns... this is something in between...
I had thought of using a rifle and bringing the sixgun for targets of opportunity... then decided that the encore and the sixgun were a good team...
recoil was fine bottom line.. no problem at all... way less than I expected..
