Scope Mount for Encore 12Ga Rifled Slug Barrel?
« on: January 17, 2008, 03:33:43 PM »
I'm looking at an Encore ProHunter stainless 12Ga rifled shotgun.

My question is:  does the Encore 12Ga Rifled Slug Barrel take the same scope base as standard Encore rifle barrels?

That is, will any base that fits a standard Encore rifle barrel (like Duo-ring, Talley, T/C, etc) fit the 12GA barrel?

are you truley set on a 12 ga slug barrel?

I have a very nice 20 ga barrel that i got with a rifle forend and did some very minor work to to make it fit good and it used a normal weaver scope mount.

The new 20 ga rounds has almost as much punch as the 12 ga and is just as accurate if not more so with less recoil. I shot a few deer with mine this year the very first deer I hit with it was knocked off its feet and was dead in it's tracks the second one was a high shot and knocked down but got back up a few minutes latter and started to walk away a second round in it's heard put it down with in 10 feet.

Doing research I found a lot of people do not like the recoil of the 12 ga and say it is very harsh. because it is a very light package.
I will say the 20 is great to carry in the woods not as nice as a pistol but nice for a shotgun feels more like a rifle then a shotgun

Thanks for the reply;  at least I won't need to find a special mount for an Encore 12ga.

This gun has not been bought yet, I'm going to see it today (Fri 1/18).  Seems like a VERY good price - $550 for a lightly used complete ProHunter Encore in stainless steel with a 12ga rifled barrel!

As far as your 20ga, thanks for the offer, but I really don't want to get into another shell type.  My son and I shoot Remingtons (870 and 11-87) and we tend to accumulate 12ga sabots (mostly Rem Solid coppers) when we see them on sale.  Probably have a couple hundred right now.  Along with pistol and rifle calibers, we've got quite an armory going.

I have seen comments about the stout recoil on the Encore 12ga, but if it's too much, I'll make my son shoot it.  Recoil is good for young'uns!

The thing that bothers me are comments from shooters having trouble getting accuracy from the Encore 12ga.  The whole idea behind our getting an Encore 12ga is to get more accurate above 100 yards with sabots.

I didn't make an offer, i wouldn't part  with my 20 ga barrel it was just a personal experience

I have seen several scope bases listed just for the 12 ga.

I to have shot 12 ga all my life and was not easy about trying a 20 ga but my shoulder was  not letting me shoot a 12 any more and still move it.
I put a limbsaver recoil pad on the 20 and I hardly know it went off. it is a very light and handy "rifle"

I am using the Remington copper solid the shells are cheaper a little and just as powerful and do show some more accuracy and due to the lighter recoil you can shoot it more accurately.

Sorry, I thought you were saying you'd sell your barrel.  I might keep an eye out for a bargain 20ga barrel, since you like yours so much.  I never really considered the 20ga for deer before.

Just got back from buying the 12ga - seems to be in great shape, already has a base mounted on it, plus a Limbsaver recoil pad.  The black composite thumbhole stock and forend seem to be a little light - maybe a walnut stock and forend would take some of the kick out of it?

Doesn't $550 seems like a low price for a complete stainless 12ga ProHunter (with thumbhole stock)?  GunsAmerica lists one for $899!

if you are happy with that price that is all that matters   :-X

I doubt that just adding wood will help much. the wood doesn't add much weight more if any over the plastic.

a lot of thing factor in how you feel recoil
how the stock fits you
how you hold the stock
recoil pad
ammo used
over all weight

since it is designed for sabots it wouldn't be wise to add a muzzle break to it however you could add something like mag-na-port and be fine.

Try the Redfield 3 ring base. I think it would be perfect for the 12 ga. round.

You can use any standard 4 screw mount , BUT you will be sorry if you do ..It will be mounted more forward  T/C Makes a 6 screw mount for the 12ga slug barrel.
You use the 4 mount screw holes plus the 2 rear sight screw holes.  I tried to go the cheap route. I couldn't for the life of me Keep the standard 4 hole mount Tight!

Thanks - THAT'S a valuable piece of information for me!  I did not know that it used 6 screws.

I've been looking at the T/C 9949 base (which is made specifically for the Encore slug barrel), and it looked pretty much like the standard 4 screw weaver base mount for Encores, except for the 2X price.

Knowing that it uses 6 screws makes it worth the $22 for the 9949 base!

Gracias for the informacion.

there has to be more to it then just using a 6 hole base.
You need a 12 ga forend as well, if the barrel was like all the others you could use the same forend as the 20 ga or other rifle barrels.
maybe the barrel has a different contor then the rest

Rickyp. the contour is the same on the bases and they are the same thickness. the mount is More forward though.  I had to get it out to check  !
Whitfang.   T/C #9949.  Is the base I'm talking about . If you have the flex tech Prohunter thumb hole stock, you have the best stock for the 12ga Barrel.  I had mine mounted on a walnut stocked frame and it is more than I wanted. Changed to the Prohunter
Flex tech thumb hole  and I love it . It's not a Gun you want to shoot off a bench to much..  Wish now I would have gotten the 20GA.   Mine loves the Hornady SST's  and Federal Barnes rounds. Best group @100 with the sst's was 1"  average is 1 1/2"to 2"
Hope this helps!

Thanks.  Glad to hear that you've found an accurate setup.

I'm going to try Hornady SSTs and Remington Copper Solid sabots, as soon as it warms up around here.

This Encore Prohunter came with the thumbhole stock and I think I'll like it.

Hope I can get groups like yours!

I personally have found that the typical thumb hols stock is best at the range and very little good for hunting unless it is an ambidextrous style

shots can come from both right and left side and a hunter may have to stitch shoulders to make a good clean shot. if your stock is for right handed shooter then it will be very hard to use it left handed. it could cause you to have to pass up on a deer of  a lifetime
