Hi All,
Whilst not having any center-fire rifles with barrels shorter than 20" I can say that cartridges, high intensity cartridges that is, like .270 Winchester do produce lots of muzzle flame and blast in short barrels. The 20" barreled rifle is in .270 Win. To get round this I took to handloading it with faster powders and one which worked well is H-380. So if you handload or have access to someone reliable who would load them for you assuming it's safe and legal that is. Just about any common cartridge can be treated this was. Sure you will loose a few FPS in velocity and I would not recommend magnum cartridges in short barrels as it sort of cancels out the point of a magnum.
