Vaquero or similar
« on: February 08, 2008, 12:06:56 PM »
Hi All,

Have been looking at a vaquero or similar model in 45LC.  While I will not load to stratospheric levels. I want to be able use safe loads that I will be using in a NEF BC 45LC.  I am looking at 260gr at about 1100-1200 fps out of the revolver.  I do not want to have to segregate ammo then get them mixed up.

Any Suggestions.

Paul

full sized old vaquero (not the current model) is about the only one that will work at those levels.

If you're wanting to have revolver ammo that HOT, you might re-consider what you want to do.  A Black Hawk with adjustable sights would be a good idea with the high performance loads you want.

Either model VAQUERO, or any fixed sight gun, is somewhat limited.  They are "close enough for government work," and can be somewhat aggravating to get to shoot point-of-aim and point-of-impact.  I have the Original Size VAQUEROS in 357 and 44...and shoot them a lot...but I don't consider them the appropriate model for high performance ammo.  They're safe and relatively comfortable to shoot with the hot stuff.  All of mine are BISLEYS or have HUNTER/DRAGOON grip frames.  But they don't deliver enough accuracy with their fixed sights.
When they said Sharps, I always thought BIG 50!

a load at about 900 fps would be plenty in a small vaquero or a clone of the saa.... 700 or 800 would do whatever you want to do as well... from the rifle the speeds would be a bit higher...

I have to agree and disagree. I agree that there a little tougher to get to shoot to point of aim and its more work to find both a light load and a high performance load that shoot close to the same point of aim but it can be done and to me its fun to do it. As to the rest i totaly disagree. Some of my most accurate guns are vaqueros. I have at least a half a dozen of them that will shoot consistant 1 inch 25 yard groups.  To me the sight picture is at least as good as the picture you get with a stock ruger blackhawk sight. I think that a bowen rear with a post front on an ajs. sight gun give a slighly better picture then anything but ive got some custom sight setups on vaqueros that will give them a run. As to high performance loads ill put it like this. Ive owned 4 500 linebaughs over the years and still have two and there both vaqueros. If the sight picture wasnt going to work on a high performance gun what do you think the chances are that id invest over 2000 bucks apiece on 500 vaqueros. Now i doubt anyone can argue that there not high performance guns. Personaly i consider the vaqueros as the ulitimate hunting machines. There strong accurate and reliable. There sights will never let you down in the field. Ive had smith, ruger and colt ajustable sight give me problems at one time or the other. I even will bad mouth bowens rough  country sights for a hunting gun as they tend to loosen up under recoil. His target sights are a much better sight.  But if you find me in the hunting field 3 times out of 4 it will be with a vaquero.
