Lead color when proper poring temp?

Well I have decided to start poring lead fore my golf ball cannon. I have a home made kiln that I use to melt brass and copper. Tried the lead and I'm guessing that glowing red is to hot. My furnace is way to hot at normal operating gas presher. The cast balls cool and leave a recessed spot from shrinkage. So is their a look or color that the lead changes to. I'm thanking the shiny mercury look. Any addvice.

I hope your casting area is WELL ventillated!!  Red or boiling lead releases a very toxic vapor that if inhaled will cause lead poisoning.  Usually for casting, as soon as the lead is all liquid and can be poured, it's ready, as you stated the mercury look.

I melt in a shop with three sides and a fourteen foot high roof  three bays wide more of a porch, plenty of ventilation.

needless to say you are way too hot.   instead of risking your health breathing toxic fumes,  spend a few dollars and get a pot designed for melting lead.  or,  use a gas stove to melt it in a pot.

Get yourself a thermometer man!!  My lead pours just right from my RCBS bottom pour pot at about 710 degrees.  YMMV

ive got to agree. For lead to be glowing youve got it WAY to hot. Even pure lead doesnt take more then 800 degrees and hotter will not be better for casting and when lead gets over a 1000 degrees it give off vapors that are bad news and no matter how well ventailated you are your likely to pick some up in your lungs.

they are correct ! the color of lead depend on much more than temp . impieties for one !

I did find a thermometer in Granger's 1000 max temp not much fore over temp and not cheep $65.00

Check on the Lyman website. I have one of their lead thermometers that clips to the side on my pot. I think they still make them, and alot cheaper than $65. Should be about half that. Around $30.  gypsyman
