New gun, tell me what I got
« on: December 26, 2008, 03:45:59 PM »
Hey guys,

I was at a gun shop today and picked up a used winchester 1300 fully rifled slug gun. It is in 95% or better condition. It is a synthetic model with factory camo paint. It also came with scope bases and rings. I put a scope on it tonight when I got home. Going to shoot it tommorow morning. Does anyone have any experience with these guns, perferred ammo, problems with the gun, etc.. I gave $250 OTD for the gun. I hope I got a good deal. It also had a brand new sims vibration recoil pad installed. Thanks in advance.

I'd say you did real well Adam. In 1995, I purchased a Winchester 1300 ranger with a 28 inch barrel and fully rifled slug barrel for $310, NIB, so taking inflation, and materials/labor cost into consideration, seems to me you did real well.

I have 2 1300 slug guns, a 12 and a 20, and my son has a 12 also, we like them, and have experienced no problems with them. The gun has an aluminum receiver, and is drilled & tapped from the factory with steel inserts installed, 6X48 threads. I particularly like the way the barrel has the 2 flat splines for alignment to the receiver. Because of the aluminum receiver, the rotary bolt, locks up within the barrel, I've experienced good uniformity and consistency with this setup.

Unfortuantely, every slug gun is a rule unto itself, and no one can really tell you what slug will work best in your gun. You have to go the expensive route now of trying different sabot slugs and see which type/brand gives you the best groups in your gun. Good luck with your new slug gun, and let us know how you make out.

I shot my new slug gun the other morning. I was very impressed to say the least. After getting it dialed in I shot 2 three shot groups at 100 yards. All of the holes were touching each other, some were mostly in the same hole. This was done with my new winchester 1300 w/rifled barrel and hornady sst's. I am off all week so I am going to try to see what those sst's will do to a deer.

Sounds like you got a pretty good deal. I also have a 1300 ranger that i put a win rifled barrel on it and Bushnell 4X Dusk to Dawn also tactical stock and fore arm, shoots great and I've taken a mess of deer with it. The only problems I've had were the trigger assembly got some crud in it and the safety wouldn't release, and the trigger pull is so heavy. Mine really likes the 2 3/4 Light fields.
