Taurus model 94 5in blue range report
« on: July 02, 2007, 06:12:55 AM »
Hi to everyone

I always enjoy reading your range reports so I thought I would add one for my new model 94 5in taurus.
Overall the gun is very nice.  Although it is rough as a cobb  for functioning.  The double action pull is the worst I have ever experienced.  Just pushing the cylinder latch to swing out the cylinder is hard as heck.  Pulling the hammer back to single action is really stiff.  The hammer is small and sharp.  My wife wore sores on both thumbs during the outing.  My thumb was sore.  HOWEVER!!  The single action trigger pull was fantastic. Sweet as could be.  The gun is new. Overall it is STIFF.  Now for the good stuff about it.  The gun is very very accurate.  I shot 4 different types of ammo for sighting in the gun.  They are  Winchester Hollow Points, Remington Hollow Points, Aguila 30gr Hollow Point Supermaximum Hyper Velocity.  And finally CCI Velocitor 40gr Hollow Points.  It likes the faster stuff best. Heres hears how it broke down. These are 25 yard groups.

1. Winchester Hollow Points= 3 inch range

2. Remington Hollow Points= 2 to 3 inch range

3. Aguila Supermaximum Hyper Velocity 30gr Hollow Points= 1 to 1 1/2 inch range (yes 1 inch) Very Good

4. CCI Velocitor 40gr Hollow Points= 1 to 1 1/2 inch groups.  Very Good.

I am excited by the accuracy of this pistol.  It was very consistant.  I always had 2 flyers in every group.  I did not consider the two flyers in the groups when reporting accuracy.  I gave the 7 shot group excluding the two obvious flyers in each group.  Even with the flyers they were very good.

These were shot with a two hand hold over a sandbag.  Overall the gun was stiff functioning but pleasingly accurate.  My wife and I both had a lot of fun shooting it.  It is fun to hit what you shoot at.

I came away with the feeling this Taurus Model 94 5in will become a great all around carry piece when in the woods or fishing.  I think (I hope) it loosens up some.  It cannot be shot in double action with any accuracy yet. That does not bother me. The excellent accuracy in single action is good enough for me. The gun is light and feels good in my hand.  My wife commented on the same thing.  She liked shooting it.  I am happy with the purchace so far.  It is not perfect but it sure shoots where you point it.  I recommend this model.  I have purchaced other guns that I could never get to shoot no matter what I put in them for ammo (single six). And some others.  This one works.

Sounds like it needs to have the grips removed and get a really good cleaning inside and out.  Might have some dried oil/grease from the factory gumming it up.  Give it a good cleaning and lightly oil the moving parts.

"2 obvious flyers" - sounds like it has 2 chambers out of alignment.  you might want to mark those so you don't shoot them (at least not your first 2 shots) if you are going to use it for hunting at all.

Sounds like it needs to be shot a lot, too, might smooth it up, some.

Thanks 35Rem
Taking off the grips and cleaning everywhere I can is not a bad idea. I will mark the 2 cylinders that show flyers and see if they are the same each time.  I suspect they are.  Still I am satisfied with the revolver.  The flyers were around 2 inches out of groups.  Nice shooting for the other 7 rounds.

2 inches is probably not out of spec.  Sounds like fun.

I have never had a gun that was as accurate with Winchester .22 ammo as Remington or Federal.  It would be interesting to see how your gun shoots the Federal HP.  That seems to be the most consistent ammo.  I may not shoot the best in a paticular gun, but it does shoot well in most of them and my guns seem to like it.  Except for the H&R breaktop, that one likes Remington Goldens the best.  44 Man

Hi 44man

I had other brands of ammo I did not test.  I had cci mini mag and federal bulk pack from wally world. I like shooting the faster stuff out of the pistol.  I have settled on the CCI VELOCITOR for most use.  A full 40gr semi hollow point at around 200fps faster than regular long rifle shells.  That should be a hard hitting round for that 5in gun. But for an afternoon of plinking I will not use them.  They cost to much.  I will try the other ammo I have and let you know how it shoots with federal hollow points. Right now I have a thousand rounds of the Aguila supermax 30gr stuff.  It shoots really well so I will shoot it until I am out of it.  For fun though I will post the results of the federal and cci mini mag. It will be a week or so.
