mild hunting loads for a 45/70?
« on: January 27, 2008, 06:40:46 AM »
just got a stainless guide gun and set it up with Leupold scout scope
it's going to be my dedicated hog gun, so, most shots will be up close, probably a hundred yards max

so, I am looking to load up some easy shooting rounds
350-425 hardcast at maybe 1350 for the 425, maybe a little faster for 350

just looking for some proven accurate load recommendations in a guide gun
powder on hand: H4198, varget, 2400

thanks in advance

20-22 grains of 2400 and a 405 is a real accurate load thats pleasant to shoot and is plenty for deer and bear.

40 grains of Varget under a Remington 405 grain bullet would be a good place to start.  It should shoot under 1" at 100 yards.

42 grains of Accurate 4350 with a 405 gr. hardcast bullet.

Very light recoil and very good accuracy from my 22" Handi.
