Where to get a shootable old Remington Rolling Block
« on: June 13, 2003, 04:38:34 PM »
I would like to get a shootable old Remington Rolling Block rifle with a 28" + barrel. It would not have to be in great shape. I would prefer a 50-70, 50-90 or 45-70, but I would be also happy to get an Egyptian .43 or Spanish .43 which I assume would be cheaper or better condition for the price. My budget would be best condition gun up to about $400-500. What would be a good source?

I just picked up a Danish rolling block for the price range you listed.  It is a remington liscensed gun.  I don't know if parts are interchangable.  the chamber can be reamed to 45/70 or you can trim the brass back a short bit to fit the 11.7 danish round.  they come up on the auctions from time to time and they sell for a lot less in good to vg condition for way less than one marked remington.  the others I had looked at were the Argintine rolling blocks but they always looked beat for the money.  Keep hunting auction arms and the others.  best of luck, JB

Isn't this something?  Back in the late 50s, early 60s, these things were sold by Ye Old Hunter and others by the pound.  As I recall, about 97 cents per pound.  Made them about $14 each.  An Uncle bought one and rebarreled it to 45-70.  Big old octagon bbl weighted a ton.  Used what he called a duplex load: 3 gr of bullseye and then a case full of black powder under a heavy cast bullet.
Wish I had it today.  Fun to shoot, big bang and smoke everywhere.
