Is it just me....or does everyone have this much trouble ??
« on: February 01, 2008, 05:35:42 AM »
Gun: encore .308 15"
Scope: Bushnell 3200 2x6

I liked the way another gun on here looked so I ordered a Stratton base and Burris Zee rings. I wanted to go ahead and be safe and do a 3 ring set up.

But I can not get 3 rings on this scope with the grooves that are cut into the Stratton base.

I can either use 2 rings , look into another base (but I got a feeling these slots are pretty standard spacing) , or potentially modify the base and cut slots where I need into it !!

Anybody ran into this problem ? I keep reading about everyone using 3 rings set ups...........what scope are they using ?

I've never owned a Bushnell 3200.   But having owned a truck load of handcannons over the years, I think its a fairly common problem depending on the chosen scope and rings.   Scopes with belled lenses and not a lot of tube diameter space on either side of the turrets can be a problem to get 3 or 4 rings on, and give you very little latitude on the scopes position front to back.   With some it just can't be done without modifications.   If you want to stay with your scope and ring choice, and it does have ample room for 2 rings between the turrets and end bell(s), probably the easiest would be to get a machinists to cut a new slot in the base.   Been there, done that.

I ran into a totally unexpected problem with 4 top end SSK JDJ handcannon barrels I bought with the full length T'SOB vent ribs and T'SOB rings.    They gave me fits with any scope with belled objective lenses.    Had plenty of space for 3 or 4 rings while using the provided base slots, but the scopes objective bells would not clear the vent rib with either style of T'SOB rings.   So my problem was ring height, not spacing.   Came down to either using higher rings by another maker instead of the T'SOB rings, or scopes with a non belled objective lens.   Considered that an oversight on both styles of T'SOB rings by JD - not offering higher rings for use on their vent rib barrels with belled objective scopes.

One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Just an option, if you're using an aluminum base, a carbide blade adjusted to the proper depth in your tablesaw will cut a perfect new slot, a little B/C Aluminum Black or permanent marker will make it look like it came from the factory. ;)

FYI although the Stratton base appears to be the same as an aluminum Weaver it definitely is not. The Stratton base is steel. Not likely you will make any cut in it without a decent mill and tooling.

You'd be surprised how much a home hobbyist can do with a drill press and a few machine tools, in this case an end mill, drill press milling vise and mister.  ;)

Thanks !! I got it set up this afternoon.............for the time being anyway !!

I mounted the scope with 2 rings......so we will see how it holds up !! I took the walnut grip and forend off to replace with a Pachmayr set. Here again is my luck............the grip went on no problem..........the forend was a pain . The spacing of the srews was a little too long (about 2-3mm/1/8th inch or so). I finally had to put a punch down the front screw hole and force the forend back(with the back screw in place)............then hold it and get a screw in it (was not what I wanted/expected). But I got it on.

On a good note...............I went and shot it a couple times .........just to get a feel for it. I was really surprised that it did not recoil nearly as bad as I expected. I haven't shot my .357 in a while.......but it did not seem any worse than it.

Surprisingly, at 5 yrds my scope was dead on with no adjustments. I shot at 25 yrds...........and hit about 4" in front of a coke can but dead on left to right . So I am optimistic about sighting it in tomorrow !!

Trigger is not as bad as I expected but I will probably have to get it dropped some !! I can't imagine it being more than a 5 lb pull right now !!

Seems like things are picking up on this project................hope that continues (I could use it)!!

FWIW--I use 2 rings (Burris Signature Zee rings) on all of my SP's-no Problems:
6.5-284, 284 Win, 7.82 Patriot, 7mm Rem mag Imp, and 7mm Dakota are my larger case capacity cartridges.

Interestingly the slots on the Stratton base will not fit any mid range (2-X) scope (e.g. Leupy, Burris, Bushnell) with 3 rings.

MGM, has a new base that has more slots in it. This may help you
