Open the lever part way, take the screw the lever pivots on out, the lever now comes out and you can pull the bolt out.Watch out for the ejector which is a small piece that will fall free when the rifle is on it's left side. Now you can clean the rifle from the breech end and clean up most of the most important working parts.

[What about the trigger and the rest of the working parts?]

They're fairly EZ to take apart, as guns go - but if you're not feeling particularly adventuresome, then just remove the rear tang screw and slide the buttstock off towards the rear.
That will expose most of the "works", so you can blast it clean/lube with CLC or somesuch spray cleaner/lube with a straw applicator.

The what?  ???   ;)

Somewhere else I posted my cleaning regimen the year I work with a particular rifle.  It ends with a detailed cleaning and then the rifle goes back in the safe (now that I have safes) for 5 - 10 years.  Generally, do as Bilmac suggested, then maybe once a year take Ranger's advice.  I think anything more is for your piece of mind rather then the weapons need.  Please!  nobody say "What if my rifle was out in Hurricane Ike!"   ::)  All comments are made with the implied understanding that people will use a little common sense!   ;) ;D

BTW, lever guns are a lot more work then bolt guns.  :(

Thanks guys. I was concerned about my trigger. I usually take apart and clean each one of my guns that i use to hunt deer at the end of the season. I hunt in all sorts of bad weather and I like to make sure my firearms are well taken care of.

I store all my guns barrel down for that same reason.

I used a rod for years but now-a-days, I usually use a bore snake of the proper size. Brush out any residue in the action and lightly oil if needed. Byron

Remove the bolt, don't lose the ejector, clean the barrel then blow everything else out with the air compressor. I then lightly oil and put away.

I remove the lever and take out the bolt, and put it back that's the extent of the cleaning I do. . .  ;D but no seriously; I haven't messed around with taking out the internal parts to give a more detailed cleaning - I think I would have to take a look at one of those videos first to feel halfway comfortable about it. :P
