I am wondering what kind of calls you all use to attract coyotes and fox  or cats. I bought a mouse squeaker but want opinions on other calls and if this will work to any help would be appreciated going coyote hunting after deer season is over.

The Johnny Stewart Squealing Bird works great with the 3 predators you mentioned.  I have mouth calls but am not good enough to call with them so I use an electronic caller.

I have used a JS electronic caller and mostly Crit'R calls with the Song Dog and Pee Wee being my favorites.

thanks all I have had no luck with learning how to use a mouth call so i will look at them and look at the electronic calls to. Thanks all i appreciate it.

Just buy you a couple calls and go for it. Basically, a cottontail call can sound high and clean while a Jackrabbit is lower toned and raspy. While we have no jacks here in IL, the coyotes seem to prefer a more raspy reed.
Once you start messing with the call you will find that some types will provide a mixture of the high and low notes and a lot depends on how much air that you are providing. You can add quaver to the notes straight from your
Diaphram. Make sure  to power the call with the air coming from your diaphram and not just air blown in from your mouth.

You can get a much better idea of what I am talking about by listening to some different types of MP3 downloads and then trying to practice the sequence with your call.
I would recommend a Lohman circle (or three in one) call as it should be readily available here an those Coyotes cannot seem to resist it. You should also be able to find some OLT calls around here as well as Faulk & Quakerboy by Knight&Hale I believe. All of them can work well...You just have to remember to play the part of that injured animal.

It has been rough around here lately with rain and warm temps and a lot of Mud!
It is cooling down quickly right now though which will help out a lot.

Happy New Year Terry! I use the red desert howler but it takes some serious practice to get the howl right. I also use a rabbit call and of course the tally-ho. I've used the tally-ho to call in more yotes than anything else and it's one of the easiest mouth calls to learn to use. For some reason the tally-ho seems to attract does.

Illhunter I 2nd the Dan Thompson Red Desert But I prefer the Sweetwater Howler He makes for calling here in Illinois. It uses the same mouth piece but has a shorter megaphone. They do take some practice but the results are worth it!!!Dan's closed reed calls are easy to learn how to use, the PC-1 or 2 and the Weems.Here is a link to his web site.

 Just get some calls and play with them that's how you learn. My call's I use are the best in my book because I have confidence in them killed many critters with them. But you could give me just about any call and with a little time I could make it work by playing with it. If you asked me 23 years ago I would have said Burnham Bro C-3 was my go to call I still got one and it works great ,but when I got it and started learning I thought it was the worst one in the world there was nothing wrong with the call it was me.  When I started learning I could not tell you how many I educated. Just keep playing with them you will get it in time.

Hey Illhunter I am new to coyote hunting just like you. I have hand calls made by primos, I love them. If you do get hand calls get it with a DVD or video because they will tell you how to use it and other calls made by them, and they will give you good points on how to stop coyotes and so forth. I would get a howler and a distress call. Also I was deer hunting and this fox came at about 150 yards or so, what I did was suck on my hand and made a high pitch noise that got its attention and it ran to about 50 yards and my Dad dropped it with his muzzle loader.

I'll have to second getting one of the little Circe 3-n-1 calls.  You can make a wide variety of noises with that little call and it really isn't hard to use.  Remember, a mouth call might sound weird to you, but 300 yards away that call sounds just like the real thing and in areas where everyone and their brother is running around with J-S and Foxpro calls, a mouth call can really seal the deal on call-shy coyotes.

I'm pretty new to this game myself, but I never call a stand without having the Circe in my pocket just in case.

When I was 17 I purchased an Olt's rabbit squealer and climbed a lower tree in the timber.  Blew on that thing for about 3 minutes and saw the only gray fox I've ever seen in Illinois? That was around 1966?
Was carrying the only rifle I owned at the time, a M1 carbine, surprised me sooo much I didn't even shoot.

I use a faulk,s  P-60 predator call and a western river electronic call .I once had a hawk swoop down at me while using the faulks call.That was a hoot....LOL.  ;D
