Can I shoot this with modern ammo?

This little guy rotates and locks up perfectly and is in time.  7 shot .22, can I shoot modern 22 ammo in it?  Larry

Larry - what 22 caliber round, short, long or long rifle??  Is it a 22 WRF???   If it is chambered in 22 long rifle you may wish to go with standard velocity rounds, or failing the availability of standard velocity, sub-sonics should go easy enough on it.  Mikey.

It would appear it is 22 LR, a LR round chambers and barely sticks out the end of the cylinder, but clears the barrel and the cylinder rotates when loaded with them.  Sub sonic sounds like a plan, they should be easier on it then the regular loads.  Larry

Larry:  some of those older revolvers were bored straight through, which would allow chambering any length 22 round although the LR seems a bit too long.  You really don't want anything sticking out the end of the cylinder as that could cause a problem. 

True, the sub-sonics or standard velocity would be easier on the old gal but you may wish to try some 22 Long first.  Slightly shorter and of lesser power than the 22 Long Rifle, but good for skippin' cans and knocking squirrels out of trees.  Just a thought.  Mikey.

If you have a local gun shop I would head there and make sure you know it is a .22. and not a ..25 or .30 Rimfire.  The picture looks like a .22 but with out a scale I have no idea if the little revolver is actually little and not a brittish bulldog design.  Next time you take a picture pleas include either a ruler or known object for size.  If it is a .22, I would use .22 CB in it.  CCI makes CB's in both long and short and they would be very mild as plinking rounds.  I would not use it for personal or home protection.  As always remember to wear eye and ear protection.

Hi Larry--you didn't identify the gun, but it looks like an H&R from your pic. My understanding regarding H&Rs is that if the cal of the ammo for the gun is engraved on the left side of the barrel, then the gun was designed to use smokeless powder  ammo. If the gun doesn't have that on the barrel it was mfg for blackpowder based ammo. It might have been made for the old win 22 round that many of the gallery guns used. If so you shouldn't use any standard modern 22 ammo in itSincerely

This is a Hopkins and Allen XL, they also make an identical pistol, 5 shot in a 32 CF.

If it is a hopkins & Allen it was made for a black powder round.
