Offset bore stub how to:
« on: January 27, 2008, 02:27:23 PM »
Having tried to remove the barrel from the offset stub of a Versapack barrel and failing I had to fall back to boring it out like I would one for a CF round, this will let a RF round be in the proper position for fireing in a CF frame.  My thought is that it will work on most rilfle barrels as well as on a .410 barrel.  I bored a sleeve so that it slipped on just in front of the hinge pin on the underlug.  I then put a center in the chamber and chucked up the muzzel of the barrel.  Then I just turned the sleeve round, now I have a sleeve with the proper offset for a RF barrel to go on a CF frame.  I can now chuck the stub in a 4 jaw chuck with the proper offset and have a proper offset sleeve for my steady rest to run on for boring the hole offset in the stub.  I can use this later for boring out a a non offset barrel.  Larry

Larry, does this mean that you can now make a .17 HMR. .17 Mach2, or 5 MM rimfire barrel to fit a centerfire Handi frame? If 5 MM rimfire ammo is reintroduced I want one!!! But even now a .17 HMR or .17 Mach2 barrel would be nice. I really enjoy my .22 Mag Versa Pak barrel and don't know wht they did not have them in the first place....<><....:)

I will do a few more measurments on a 410 barrel, but I am sure there is enough metal to offset anything RF.  I am going to use the 5MM rf case for me necked down RF .14 project now that the ammo is released, that should get a 12gr bullet moving.  I have been posting this on the CF board because the offset barrels fit the CF frames and now the 5mm mag cartridges are reaching the pressures only found in CF rounds, so I am not sure that the RF handi frame would be up to the new 5MM Mag.  Larry

I have a box of it on the way, I am going to pull them down, neck them to .14 and shoot them out of my little .14 NEF stub project.  Bet this will be the first wildcat based on the 5MM Remington RF Mag.  Larry

Pictures so far, the stub is bored, I turned the barrel and cut threads on the end, I will make a threaded nut/sleeve to use to tighten the barrel into the stub, I counter bored the breach end for the sleeve to fit up into, I will use it as a nut and then machine off what is left sticking out of the breach.  I will take pictures when I get it built.  Larry

Built the threaded nut/sleeve and cut it about .002 oversized to the counter bore in the breach stub.  I put some sleeve retaining locktight on it and drove it into the breach.  Then I screwed in the barrel and tightened it down.  You can see the slight thread ring in the picture, the breach is rough turned, I will finish it exactly when I fit ti to the frame, I leave a few thousanths high on the barrel so I can gain a little tightness on the frame if I need it.  Note the little bitty .14 cal hole.  Larry

I put a taper on the front of the stub to meet the barrel, finish turned the breach and this is about what it will look like, I still need to make a barrel band, the barrel is stainless, so I can either make a stainless band or parkerize one for some contrast.  Again the breach was out of square with the bore, this has been the case with everry barrel I have worked with, could be one of the reasons some shoot and some never will.  Larry
