More Remington Trigger Problems

I took out my Remington 788 last Saturday to go hunt some coyotes and discovered that the trigger was frozen. I keep my guns in excellent shape and when I removed the barreled action from the stock everything looked good. I removed the bolt and still the trigger and safety were frozen. I cleaned everything with lighter fluid then carb cleaner and let it soak still nothing! This little .222 was shooting pretty good last year but this year I am at a lost as to what happened. Everything looks perfect. if anybody can help me thanks. This is the first time I ever had a problem with any Remington gun and I have quite a few,but this is the only Remington I bought used.

It's not a good idea to delve into a Remington trigger without some advance knowledge. I know of no common reason for this kind of lockup but suspect either rust or oil that's gone to varnish(very likely the latter). You might try soaking the action(sans the stock) in mineral spirits. Be sure the trigger is submerged. Let it soak for a week or so and try cleaning with carb cleaner, etc. If it still is frozen then a trip to a gunsmith would be a good idea. These 788 triggers are very like the M700 triggers just lacking the adjustment screws.. They are a pretty much closed system and thus subject to dirt and gummy buildup. They also like to rust if not properly protected..

Thanks Gunnut.It was varnish. I had to do more than I wanted a complete dis-assembly of the trigger,cleaning re-lube and install.Took it out yesterday and rolled two. The trigger while crappy worked better than ever.
