Strange Black Bear Dens
« on: January 29, 2008, 09:08:53 PM »
I'm reading another book on black bears.  Black Bear Hunting by Richard P. Smith.  The author has an interesting picture of a black bear that used an eagle's nest high up in a tree to den one winter.  What other unique den spots have you heard of?  Pictures?

I just received that book in the mail. It seems to be very informative especially on shot placement.

It has some good pictures.  I read some sections more than others.  I just thought that the bear den topic was seasonal.  We had a bear den under a chair lift at the ski area out here one year, but I would have never thought one would den in an eagle's nest.  Imagine the surprise if an eagle were to return to his nest and find a bear.

Successful Black Bear Hunting by Bill Vaznis is a book I liked just as well.  And again it has some nice pictures.  I like pictures.

I have heard of Black Bears laying down in the open and " hibernating " there until Spring.
