C&H Recoil Suppressor
« on: December 23, 2003, 11:25:15 AM »
My wife has a NEF Pardner 20ga. shotgun.  Even though I load relatively light loads in it she still feels the recoil is kind of hard.  My question is, has anyone had any experience with  the C&H mercury recoil suppressor?  They don't cost anymore than a rubber recoil pad and can be installed without any gunsmithing.
Thanks;

I have installed one in my Browning Citori that I use for trap, and it has made a noticable difference.

Yes, Tony, the CH suppressors do work.  For one, they add mass to the shotgun and that softens recoil by itself.  (This is the same reason I added 1/2 oz of lead to my .45 hardball magazines.)  Further, the inertia action spreads recoil over a longer time, and that makes the recoil seem less.   All the CH suppressors I've used were easily fitted in the existing stock cavity, but drilling a cavity should not be all that taxing.  I would then wrap tape around each end of the CH to bring the diameter to a good fit to the cavity.  Lastly I would make a spacer out of wood in case the cavity was too long since the CH needs to be a snug fit in order to work.  The other way to attack the recoil problem is lighter payload weights and slower velocities.

I must agree....I have a Mercury Recoil Suppressor from C&H Research installed in the stock of my NEF 10GA Turkey gun.  I measured the steel bar that comes with the NEF for recoil reduction and gave those measurements to the man at C&H.  He custom cut me a suppressor to fit my stock bolt hole.  It didn't cost me any more than a normal sized one.  At least it didn't two years ago when I ordered it.  The suppressor reduced the felt recoil considerably.
