New Price Hike For Bullets!
« on: January 18, 2008, 02:58:44 AM »
I purchased some bullets last week, and decided to order some more this week. After talking to the person at the vendors,I found that ALL the prices had increased. I expected them to after the first of the year, but not an average of 3.50 per box! :o Man this is gonna put a REAL dent in my shooting! >:( The (el cheapo's) are now as much as the premium bullets. Did Exxon/Mobile buy out the bullet company's? ::) The prices are also very inconsistent also. A box of 40gr. bullets is the same price as a box of 60gr. bullets. That's like buying a gallon of milk for 4.00,and being told a quart of mike is 4.00 also? What's up? Ron

It's part of a general price hike and the dynamics are rather odd right now. Especially for shotshells. Today I can buy magnum shot for the same price as magnum shot. And I can buy factory ammo for less than I can make reloads.

Just bought a box of 100 Speer 150 grain hot cor .308 bullets and a box of Nosler HG partition bullets for 44 magnum. Cost was about $75. Ouch.

The high prices do make the premium bullets less appealing to me though. Those Speers are looking better every day when prices are this high.

One way I can look at it is,
I drive truck and have done so for years and to make a long story short and not get off topic on a whole other story is.
To a point freight pays about the same as it did say 10 years ago in a lot of cases it even pays less than it did.
Rather than a fix to the problem we have fuel surcharges with still low freight rates but this still drives the cost up.
with 3.60 a gallon for diesel fuel and more in other areas this all adds up to more on your end.
Milk ,grocery items, you name it.are all gone up do to higher price for the load to get from point a to point b .
remember that if you bought it (a truck brought it)
then like most it goes to a warehouse than trucked to the smaller delivery points.like walmart they somewhat get a better deal as the whole load goes to one place but they move stuff from warehouse to store but this still cost. the same goes for the small outfit that sells bullets in that if they took a whole truck load at a time it would be somewhat cheaper then some just add more to this and try to make more.from what I have noticed in the industry ( I may be wrong ) is that say speer, hornady, etc can produce so many bullets
at a time faster and cheaper than the small elcheapo bullet guy,the point b,c,d etc people that get these mark them up.
so say midway buys from a sales rep and midsouth buys right from speer they would get a better deal in what i have seen.

I can buy apples at the point a for $15.00 for a #40 box or case.this is like .38 a pound
If you go to the store and buy these at $1.00 a pound look at the mark up.So the #40 case cost $40.00
Just to also show it's not the truck getting rich= I can take these from michigan to ohio for $1000.00 for me & truck
At 24 pallets with 40 cases per pallet=960 cases
960 cases at 15.00 =14400.00
960 cases at 40.00=38400.00
subtract my $1000.00 from 38400.00=37400.00 then subtract 14400.00=23000.00 mark up on that load that save a lot ,walmart
would make.
the stores love to lead you to belive that the trucking has put the big increase in your items cost,It's not ,it is them with the big mark up and blaming the truckers.they just keep raising the price to keep this big profit as they are not going to loose any money, they know you will continue to buy.

In the earlier post I meant that I can today buy chilled shot for the same price as magnum shot.

Kurt L: It's amazing how the finger pointing works. My wife is from a farming family and they say similar this to what you just wrote about trucking. The farmers are often blamed for cost increases when in reality the price they are paid for produce like corn and soybeans without it necessarily impacting retail costs. There's so much markup from the farm to the grocery store.

I've never been able to understand why truckers have to feel the pinch of high transportation costs when it is generally known that fuel as a commodity should be a dynamic part of the cost. I also think people should be able to make a living at their work, and trucking clearly is valuable.

that is very true.
the farmer has the high fuel ins etc like the trucker.
like my post above I forgot to add that after the broker takes a cut 370 for fuel
I end up with about 400 bucks to live on pay expenses etc just like the farmer.
the others are getting all the clear cash and blaming the farmer and trucker.
I am also sure the people like speer, sierra, hornady etc are doing what they can to control cost,
like use this company b to haul our product cheaper than company a,but its the fat cats at the end or
middle that are putting the big mark up on these items.than they blame the little guy to get the attention away from them.
it is nothing to pay over 100,000.00 for a new combine or tractor and same goes for a truck.
you have to have these tools to do the job, they just try to point the finger as said and say look at the new tractors etc
that the farmer has and new truck the trucker has to draw the attention away from them.most places will not let you haul loads with a truck over 5years old.
Truckers feel the pinch because companies want there item moved as cheap as they can and thats only fair.
you have comanies like JB HUNT that have thousands of trucks and big numbers is what they are,all they need is a penny a mile profit
per truck for the thousands of trucks they have on the road. this drives the rate the shippers pay down and the small family guy
owner operator cant,t do it for a penny a mile.they are just pushing us out.
just like the small family farm is long gone they are all going to factory farms.

Kurt L:

I didn't know that. I always wondered what is putting strain on independent truckers.

The "ONE" company that had the lowest increase was,Hornady. Kinda strange where the othersincreased their prices 2.75-3.50, while Hornady increased their price around 1.00 across the board. Ron

Prices haven't went up yet on anything but Winchester. I see more and more WSM guns on the shelves for sale now and very little "standard" calibers.

I too see a lot of super mags on the used shelf. At 35-50 bucks a box you can have them. I went to the 243 win and my kid is starting out with a 243 compared to a 270 win. This will help some.

.243 cost more here than a .270 ammo.
