3031 in the 45-70

any of you guys use this powder in your 45-70? im starting with 50 grains under a 400 grain bullet. close to a compresed charge.m loading cast bullets. any feed back would be appreciated.buy the way im shooting a buffalo classic

You're going to be the expert on this particular load and will have to provide feedback to others  Each rifle is different with what it likes.  I have a feeling though it will be close to a minute of deer combination.

That's the only powder I used back when I had my Browning BPCR in .45-70. It's versatile enough to give a wide range of velocities with bullets from 300 grains to over 550 grains. I got good accuracy with it in mine and when I get around to loading for my BC I'm sure it's what I'll use again. For now I've got some Black Hills CAS ammo left. If I could afford it that's all I'd shoot in the BC tho as the recoil is mild it's accurate and has adequate power for anything I'll ever do with the rifle.

that's what I'm looking for is a good hunting load. i have a nice reduced load for play. if i go any faster ill have to use a gas check bullet are maybe a verge  wad on my plain base bullet. will try differant combos and let you know

With 50 grains of IMR3031 under a cast bullet you will need a gas check for soft alloys, but shouldn't need one for hard casts (15+ BHN).  55 grains can be expected to be a maximum with a 400 grain bullet and will require a BHN of 18 or more without a gascheck.  Of course gas checks can't hurt in any case.

My load in my Ruger #3 is 55.5 gr's of IMR 3031 with a 300gr Nosler partition. I like the Nosler. I tried the Hornady 300 HP, But I found that with this load if it hits bone, it has a tendency to blow up and make a mess.
The #3 with this load is deadly on deer.
