.357 mag handi rifle
« on: February 03, 2008, 06:59:21 AM »
what is a good load to hunt deer in a .357mag handi rifle? ( new to the handi Rifle)   I have shot many deer with my ten inch T/C .357 mag using 158 HP. But what I hear is the handi  likes heavy bullets. Is this right?

My .357 likes the Federal 180 grain Power Shoks.

If you'll check my post on .357 chamber specs you will find they have a very long and sloppy chamber. For that reason I would suggest 180 grain bullets seated out as long as possible to minimize the effect of the "throatless" chamber. The chamber is so long that some people are using the longer .360 Dan Wesson brass in the the factory .357 mag chamber. With the Remington 180 JHP bullets and top end loads I think it is a 150 yard rifle but that is pushing it, 100 yards is more comfortable.
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.

If you do a search, you'll see that 357mag chambers have been discussed a lot, here's one of the more recent threads..

Mine will shoot anything well but it really likes the 180gr bullets especially cast bullets, the 158 rem bulk softpoints work very well on deer also, I've had the best luck with the simpler bullets.
