45-70 Buff Classic maxed out elevation. Still 8" low @ 25 yds.
« on: February 02, 2008, 08:28:16 PM »
I've run out of elevation on my Buffalo Classic in 45-70 and, it's still 8" low at 25 yards!  This is with the Lever Evolution ammunition.  Is there an easy fix?  I thought the hotter round would help.  It didn't.

They put the wrong front sight on, it's not uncommon, the 17A front sight is available in .404", .494" and .584", you've probably got the .584" sight, several of us put the .404" sight on and it works perfect. I don't know if H&R offers the .404", but it would be worth asking them if they'll provide a lower front sight, give em a call, toll free (866)776-9292. Or just buy one, they're about $30.

H&R really messed up with the sights on the Buff Classic...I put a Smiths ladder sight on the back and a DP glob w/ level on the front...both are SASS legal and work fine together...hit steel Buffalo's out to 300 yds with no problems.
M1, M1A, 03A3, SMLE, No4 Mk1, No5 Mk1, Geweher M 1898, 98k (2), M44, Type 99, SKS, FNC, SAR-48, CAR-15 and civilian stuff too.

Try the steel buffalo at 1000yds!! :o The nice thing about shooting metal "clanger" targets, every hit is a 10X!! ;D

Tim, thanks for thinking of me and the link back to my post.  Noticed that the picture links were broken  >:( ... so they have been fixed!
Here's the 16" Bullseye that I painted on Homer at my Oct 07 visit (notice the dings!)...

Great Memories and will be back to 'visit' Homer again this Spring  ;D

Knight, yes - that be Homer of Ridgeway, PA fame
The BPCR boys out West have a buffalo silhouette - but he is MUCH bigger than Homer.
Can't wait for Spring to arrive to get back up there, including the Wednesday night all you can eat king crab legs for 18 bucks at the Royal Inn

It's worth a try, it's my opinion that they install the 38-55 Target sight on the BC in error, there have been plenty here that were happy with the way they shoot out of the box with the factory sight, so I think they just put the wrong sight on. But to get the most out of any 17A sight you use, the .404" works best for any long range shooting, but I don't think they offer it, just the .494" and 584". Using the .404 17A sight,  shooting 405gr Rems at trapdoor velocities in my 45-120, with the Williams FP target sight at the bottom of its travel, POI is 1"-1½" high at 100yds, just about perfect IMO, 10 clicks up and 535gr bullets at 1800fps are hitting point of aim at 200yds, so it's a very versatile height.

But if you're really into long range shooting, a spirit level sight would be the best choice if you're gonna spend money on a new sight. I can only shoot to 300yds here, so there's not much point in spending $150-$300 for a decent front sight, although I do like the Lee Shaver insert set for the 17A sights . ;)

The tough part will be removing the sight, they really stick em in there tight with something.
