336 in 44 mag
« on: January 17, 2008, 03:50:42 PM »
I just got my first Marlin lever. It's a 336 in 44 mag. Guys at the shop said they had never seen on in 44 mag. I checked in the FAQ files above and it was made in 1964.
Anyone have experence with these?
I haven't shot it yet. Next Thursday most likely.
Its in nice shape though.

I saw a used one at a gun show and didn't buy it.  Wish I had now.  It is much slicker operating than the 1894 model.

Yup got one here it was given to me by a friend back in '91 I believe it was just before we were to head to Texas for an exotics hunt. My wife says it's hers. She used it to take both her rams on that hunt and has taken it hunting several times since. I much prefer it to the 1894 myself.

Also have one. Was made in the sixty's in very limited numbers. Cool gun, mine really likes the new Leverevolution Ammo.

I've long wanted a 336 in a long pistol caliber, and been told consistently it can't be done, at least reliably.  Now I have a single shot in 445 SuperMag and would be a very happy man to learn I could get a custom 336 in that caliber.  454 would work also, but is shorter and higher pressure.  The 445 is just a stretched 44 mag.  If the 44 works OK, it seems to me the extra 1/10 inch in length (about 2" loa) might be even better.  My ideal rifle would be with nice wood, good fit and finish, and oct barreled, so a new bbl would be needed but I might not be that picky if I found I could do it at all.  Wonder if the 44 could just be reamed 1/10 and carrier adjusted to feel reliably.  I don't mean to be just re-asking the same question, but this thread has given me hope.  Many thanks.

Killed my first blackbear with a 336 in.44 mag. Had some problems with it ejecting shells from it, but it was a shooter. Wish I still had it today.

I have a Dan Wesson,in .445sm. And did some checking around, and was told the Winchester 94 would be the gun to use, if you wanted to set up a lever gun in that caliber. As the action is already made for a longer cartridge, and it would be easier to shorten, than lenghen the action, if necessary. And I did some comparisons, the rim thickness and diameter are so close between the 30/30 and the .44/.445 that it doesn't look like the bolt or extractor would need much work. But then, I'm not a gunsmith.  gypsyman

Didn't Winchester make an "Angle eject" or  some similar name rifle that allowed for scope mounting?  I had ruled out the 94 because my old eyes need a scope for hunting.  I saw the 94 would accept the 454 Casull too.  How does accuracy potential compare to the Marlin unit?   -Mike
