JP Muzzle Brake ?
« on: February 01, 2008, 11:34:03 AM »
Anyone using this "Tank Style " brake?  It is rather large and I expect quite loud but appears that it would be very effective?  I was also wondering how they thread the barrel to get the brake to end up horizonal when tight?  I qould think that getting it to stop when in the correct position would be a task?

I'd suggest contacting SSK with your questions. I'm aware of one of that style that they put on a friend's .416 Taylor Encore handgun.

Good brake for sure.
I prefer Holland's Quick Discharge myself.

I've never put a brake on any firearm.   Don't like them and any pluses they may claim are outweighed by too many minuses for my likes.   Have bought a few custom TC barrels that had MB's machined into them (MagNaPort, Arrestor and VVCG), and a couple of XP-100's with external brakes.   Didn't keep the TC barrels long, re-barreled or removed the brakes from the XP's.   Just personal choice though.

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

I've got the JP breaks on two contender bbl's , one chambered in 30-30 and another on on a 7x30-30 {7-R] , I used the 7-R in IHMSA  Unlimited standing class with an bumped scope{18 x 40}.
When shooting it on the bag the pistol will actually move forward, NOT up and back. The major draw back to this  break is the noise and blast that comes back to both sides of the shooter.
As suggested above, you will have to contact someone that installs these to find out how they position them.

For me, it depends what the brake is used for, I don't much care for them on big game guns, but do use them on the Varmint/PD rigs.
Now to answer the ?.
I do have the JP on my Encore 6mmAI. I really like it for when I don't have spotter to call the long range shots.
It makes for seeing bullet impact real easy. That's not saying other can't do the same, I just haven't played with enough of them to know.
I  don't believe the JP is threaded on, maybe some are. I'm not sure, but mine is soldered or however they do it. Some people don't care for the looks of them. I really don't care one way or the other about cosmetics. As long as everything functions the way I expect, I'm happy.

Bob96...I'm a little late on this one...what you are referring to is called "timing" the brake...they are threaded on...if you go to www.jprifles.com you can look at all they have to offer but they are probably going to send you to www.eabco.com to have one installed...I had one installed on my 375 JDJ (two week turn around from eabco)and I must say its got to be the nicest shooting pistol I own...and I do not handle recoil very well...for comparison the recoil is about half that of my Ruger Super Blackhawk in .44 Mag...
