Question for anyone who may know

I recently need more room for a couple of my babies (my guns). I was going to get a new gun cabinet but after looking and measureing I just do not have any room for one at the time. So this leads me to my question. I am going to get some good hard plastic cases. Do I need  to put anything in there with my guns like the silica gel stuff to guard against rust or will they be alright without it?

They seal pretty good it would not hurt to drop a couple packs in.
I buy clear silicon lube spray cans stp,cyclo is two i have used and spray the gun down good with it and it hangs right on
it don't evaporate like a lot of the oils.then i just use a rag with hoppes no.9 and it comes right off.

Just check them periodically to make sure they aren't drying out.  In my experience the padding in the case seems to pull the oil from the gun.  If they're well oiled before putting them up a little ambient moisture won't get to them.  Clean any excess oil before firing (especially out of the bore).

Check Midway for the gun sacks.  They are impregnated with silicone and do prevent rust even in humid areas.  They were running about $9 for a package of six.  You can also get them for pistols.  One size fits all.

I agree with the guys on the socks.  They work great.  Try to store your weapons in an area that is low in humidity or does not change temp alot (attic)  Just be sure to check em every once in awhile to make sure they are ok.  In my old house I had limited space also.  I made a safe to keep the kids out, on my side of the closet. It worked out great for that time in our lives.  Now we are in a larger house I finnally broke down and got a safe. I still have a small one in my closet though.  Old habits are hard to break.    good luck

The guys above have given sound advice.
   I`ve had guns in hard and soft cases of years and suffered no ill affects. 
   At a min I clean my "boys" twice a year. That`s not counting the hunting trips or trips to the Gun Range.
   Keep a eye on-un and they`ll last a life time.

How do the gun socks work over scopes and do you put the gun in the sock and then store them in your gun safe.

the ones I use/ used slipped right over the scope.  I would advise you that, If you don't already have caps for your scope get some --- so the silicone won't have a chance to get on your optics.

The major factor is where you live.  If you live in a humid climate, you will need something to assure no moisture gets to the guns.  If you live out in the desert it's not an issue.  Here in Fairbanks we are arid just like Tucson AZ, moisture is not a problem.

Cabelas sells silica gel in various sizes, the small one works great in a single gun case that I carry a 17hmr Sporter permanently in the under deck storage area of my SUV, never had any rust problems and it only gets cleaned when accuracy goes away.  ;)

I have noticed a couple of times that we have been rained out while hunting that when I got home my hard cases were damp inside (foam lined) and have been stored in the camper.  Something to look into before using them for a storage container.   Gun socks may be a better option.
