Barnes TSX bullets
« on: February 08, 2008, 03:08:29 AM »
Given the Barnes triple shock bullets are great for the .35 Whelen.  I read over in the Africa forum that they were great in .30-06.  Does anyone have a good load and bullet size for the .30-06 and .308?  I have both.  Also, the .300 WM.  From what some have said, with the right loads it almost eliminates the need for the .300.  Thanks

In my 30/06 I've found the 165 grain TSXs over Varget to be very accurate.  Better yet, with the same load, Barnes 165 gr. banded solid spitzers hit the same place as the TSXs in case yoy need a load for minimal fur damage.

Here's my results with my .308, for me they were too squirrely.

Barnes TSX 168gr BT, 42gr Varget = 3" @ 200yds
Nosler Ballistic SilverTip 168gr, 42gr Varget = 3/8" @ 200yds

Is this because the .35 Whelen likes a slower burning powder and the TSX works so well with Reloader 15.  Also, the Whelen has a 1 in 14 twist, which spins a little slower?

Did you try and tweak the load with the TSX?  My results were just the opposite with 180gn boattails of those exact two bullets, the TSX's shot better, that was over 53 grains of H414.

You can't use the same load for two different bullets.  One load you worked up for one will be totally different for another.  For the silvertips, I get good results with RL22, so I use that.  And the TSX's like H414 better for me....  Even with their prefered powders, I still had better results with the TSX.

I  had one three shot group with the 150 grain TSX's that you would have the be reaching to even call ragged at 150 yards, that was over 58 grns of H414.

Yep, I tried 44gr Varget and they still shot the same. I could try max loads to see if the faster RPM stabilizes them better. Some barrels just don't like certain bullets.
