best scope mounts for contender?
« on: February 05, 2008, 04:11:56 PM »
I am currently waiting on a 14 inch contender barrel in 30-30, and I was wondering what y'all think is the best deal as far as scope mounts are concerned. I haven't quite decided on a scope yet either, so any suggestions would be appreciated
Thanks

Which scope(s) depends entirely on what your uses for the 30-30 barrel will be (big game hunting, IHMSA, target shooting, etc).    Not knowing that, the Burris 2-7, Bushnell Elite 3200 2-6 and Nikon Monarch 2.5-8 are all good compromises for mid ranges and game.   As the 30-30 is tame, any mount you like will work.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Hi
I use the weaver type base and rings on mine and have had no problems. I use the Bushnell 3x9 on a 222 Remington 14 in. bull barrel and seems to work just fine, has not shot loose. Deaconllb

I use Warne bases and rings. One mounted on 44 mag contender and one on a TC Triumph ML. No problems, a very solid mount that is easy to install.

I prefer either an MGM or Stratton Custom (or the old VVCG) base with Warne rings. This setup has worked flawlessly for me, and I see no need to change.

A good setup is a must. True, a 30-30 isn't a heavy kicker such as a .375 JDJ, but the G-forces exerted upon the scope/mount can rattle an inferior setup loose in a hurry.

They may have improved them by now, but the TC Duo-Mounts used to feature very short screws and would shoot loose on a .223. The mount itself was decently-engineered, but the screws provided with them were absolutely inferior for the task at hand. Switching them out was a must.

As for scopes, the older TC 2.5-7x along with the Burris, Nikon and Bushnell Elite are very solid performers and will serve you quite well.

Thanks for the suggestions everybody, I will primarily use this barrel for hunting and was thinking along the lines of a fixed power 2x or 3x scope for taking whitetail here in TX. I think the barrel is coming in monday and I will be working up a few loads this weekend.
