Removing the finish from your stocks

I was wondering what everyone uses to remove the finish off that old stock they are refinishing. I have only done a few and have been lucky that they have all been over sized forearms and stocks. So sanding was not a problem in removing the old finish. As a matter of fact the sanding helped make the wood fit the gun better. However when the wood is already the size and shape you need it to be, Sanding isn't an option. I was just curious what everyone uses when you can't use sandpaper and why you use it.

Oven cleaner is my new do-all stripper, but it doesn't get all enamel paints off.

Use Strip-Eze semi paste.  It is thick enough to stay in place and works great.  The stripper has to stay on long enough to work properly.

You may also try.
I found scotch brite pads i think is the name,they are very much like the pads your wife may use
for dishes. these are like 5"x10" by 1/4 " thick you can get these at any auto store that sells auto paint
supplies. they come in fine ,x fine,med,coarse. and they follow the contour a lot better than paper and don't
leave the scratch marks that paper does and they do a great job at this type work.

I just did a Rem. Mountain Rifle. I think I got the recipe from this Site. Citristrip and rap with Aluminum Foil and leave over night. Scrape off the next day with a Plastic scrapper, use a Nylon or Brass Brush gently in the Checkering. If there is still some finish left, do it again. When You get to where You want it, I cleaned it with Acetone. This seemed to work just fine. I think the secret is the Tin Foil Wrap.

Stop all your aggrivation, and make a visit to the Painless Dentist.

Go to WallyWorld, buy the small green can of Homer Formby's Furniture Refinisher and a pack of OOOO steel wool from the paint department.

Follow the can directions, pour a little refinisher into a small dish, sop some up with a new OOOO steel wool pad, and just wipe off all the old finish - even in the checkering, where I use an old toothrush.

Let the stock dry overnite, stain if wanted/needed, then finish with Tru-Oil (from WW, too).
