Removing a broken Hoppes Bore Snake …..
« on: February 09, 2008, 12:14:44 PM »

A hypothetical situation I’ve often thought about when running a Hoppes Bore Snake through my Browning B78 – how could you remove the tail end section if it literally broke off whilst inside the barrel ? Any suggestions……

I think the hydraulic solution in this boresnake horror saga at RFC would merit consideration, this was just the first thread on it, there were two follow-up threads IIRC, he ultimately sent the rifle to Hoppes or Hoppes' gunsmith and Hoppes ended up replacing the barrel or the entire rifle since they buggered the chamber in it getting the snake out. :'(

Tim, thanks for your referral to the RFC site - it certainly does pose a serious problem. I wonder if 'Hoppes' have thought of or devised a practical solution to this otherwise very costly dilemma ?

I think the tiny bore of the .17hmr aggravates the issue in that situation, not much wiggle room, it's the only serious occurrence I've read about, although I've read many complaints of them being hard to pull thru, particulalry in small bores. Many RFC members remove the brush from snakes, but that's mainly for rimfire applications. Personally, I only use them for field cleaning once or twice, then wash the snake in a laundry bag in the washer, they're great for shotguns.

You couldn't just push it through with a normal old bore cleaning rod?
