New Catalog from H&R
« on: February 13, 2008, 01:19:34 AM »
On Feb. 12Th I  got TWO catalogs in the mail.  The first was from H&R - it showed all the new guns that they are not going to have.  The second catalog was from Knight Muzzleloading and it showed their new KP-1 with even more new barrels.

I love my handi's but if Remington doesn't persuade H&R to follow through with what they promise, I'm afraid the Handi will go from top to bottom in less time than it takes to clean a Thompson Triumph.

H&R has tried to market the 35 Whelen barrel twice now.  The last offering was not as good as the first and it was taken off the market before I could buy one.  I called customer service at Knight and was told "no they didn't have a medium bore barrel  -  YET."

I've got enough rifles to last me three lifetimes.  My grandsons are my only excuse to buy new toys.  The switch barrels allow me to add to their collections but I don't want to give them a bunch of "ORPHANS"

I can't speak loud enough to get anywhere but in trouble, BUT if we all get together and YELL, we can save Americas favorite single-shot from extinction!

Just my thoughts!  Maybe I need to stay in bed a little later in the mornings!  Comments?

I don't pretend to know what is going on at H&R or whether Marlin is still playing a role there or now. Since Remington owns both they likely will call the shots but then since Marlin was a parent to NEF they still might be a middle man between them and Remington.

It's not impossible that Remington saw NEF as competition to their Russian imported single shot and decided to remove the competition by buying them out and closing them down. I just dunno what to make of it. However it doesn't seem at least so far that the buy out is helping NEF and may be hurting them.

What you are seeing is the start of the consolidation by Cerebus of the Remington Marlin merger. First thing that happens in these mergers is all new projects / developement are put on hold and have to be re justified. That is the real reason for the magnums not showing up. H&R will have to make a very strong showing to management just to survive. And spending money on new product developement isn't away to do that. My bet is they won't survive. To much foreign competion using slave labor for little old H&R to survive. And while I like the handirifle there quality control leaves a lot to be desired. If you get a good one you have a good one if you get a bad one you have a bad one and with out a lot of work or trips back to the factory you won't ever have a good rifle. There is no excuse for a rifle to leave the factory with a Head space issue or a bore out of center or breach faces that look like they where cut on a chop saw or bores that are so over size you can't buy bullets that fit. just to name few of the topics of late. Not to many people will put up with that for very long. I would bet the H&R brand will survive but not the made in America label.

Yep...........and I can't help but wonder if BIG GREEN called the last minute shot on taking the Handi 22 Hornet out of the line up..........BECAUSE..........of their large investment in the .17 Fireball............so large in fact they droped there own .221 Fireball this year.

They have a lot of bucks from set up to major advertising in the 17 Fireball.

If compared to the 22 Hornet it was not - so much louder, did not barrel foul as much (Hornet can go hundreds of rounds), had as long of a accurate barrel life,  other besides BIG GREEN actually had brass (monopoly), more bullets for reloading, heavier bullets, not such high priced ammo, more ammo besides just BIG GREEN...........etc,etc,etc,   I may actually want one !!!  :D

Again.........I have to believe............"have to"..............that NEF was selling a good amount of Handi Hornets............likely in their top 5 calibers for sales.................I suspect BIG GREENS............17 Fireball !!.............eliminate the competition ...........the less Hornets out there the more our PROPRIETARY 17 Fireballs rifles, bullets, brass and ammo sales !     >:(

Remington bought out Charles Daly.  Today if you buy a Remington 798, you are actually buying an imported Charles Daly Mauser.  If that isn't buying out your competition, I  don't know what is.  The only thing different about that rifle is the higher price tag.

I would think Big Green would drop the Spr-18 and gut the H&R line,  leaving the name as H&R for a few years so Big Green doesn't catch any flax for the changes while they evaluate the profitability of each item as it relates to their overall game-plan.

I believe Smith &Wesson owns Thompson Center Arms now.  Should we look for Ruger to buy out Knight Rifles?  Actually, we the consumer are being told what to buy, based on how profitable it is on the Tier 1 Corporate Holding Company.

Remington didn't buy out Charles Daly what they did was buy out the guns from the maker supplying Charles Daly so that CD could no longer import them. Big difference.

I wouldn't think the Hornet or the magnums would be profitable for NEF.  Perhaps Remington feels the same way.
