red dot sights
« on: April 14, 2008, 09:32:39 AM »
I was hoping i could get some reccommendations on what red dot sight would do well on the ruger super red hawk in 454 casull While i think my rear peep and fiber optic front sight should do fine on big game to 75-100 yards , i was just curious about the red dot sights. For some reason i cant seem to focus with handgun scopes , and i was also wondering what bases would be best , i was looking at both b square and weigand.  Thanks Tanoose

I'm having problems picking a scope myself, 475 linebaugh really breaks things with recoil.  As for the mounts, go with the Weigand, I've got them on everything I own.  I live 20 minutes from Jack Weigands shop, and can tell you first hand, the guy is good ay what he does. For the heavy recoil revolvers, go with the 3, or 4 ring setup.  His rings are awsome, and the price is very right, give a all Weignd setup a try, you'll love it.

Check out the Ultra Dot red dots. I don't personally have one, but if I decide to put any sort of optic on my 45-70 BFR this will be it. By all accounts they are virtually indestructible.

The only red dot scope I have used is on my Horton crossbow and it is great. The selector switch allows you to adjust the dot in regards to available sunlight, ie: you can dim the beam close to dark so the glare of the beam does not cover your target. If I ever go toward a slug gun or hunting handgun I will definately use a red dot sight.

Had a J-Point and a Dr. Optic on my Taurus 454.  They held up to the recoil of  240, 250 & 300gr at 1,400 to 1,600 fps but they both have a parallax problem if the dot is not in the middle of the screen.  They state they're parallax free but they're not.  Pick the dot up in the corner or even off center at 50 yds and it's a wonder.
Tried the Bushnell Holosight, worked well at 44mag level but above that, well the internal screen/lens shattered after 10 rounds at Casull levels.  Sent it in for repair, shattered again.
The Bushnell Trophy 2X Fixed power has a much better field of view at 100 yds than the Trophy or Elite Variables(had an Elite) and holds up well.

Settled on the AimPoint CompM3, will handle the recoil and is a fine optic.  I suggest the 2 MOA dot size for ranges up to 125 yds.  The 4 MOA starts to cover too much area for my preference past 50 yds.  Although for fast target acquisition under 50 yds the 4 MOA works very well.

The 2x Trophy is a good and reliable 2nd place.  All this IMHO.
Be Safe!

I put a Millet Compact on my S&W .357 just to see how accurate reloads were. I don't know a whole lot about red dots but I think its good for being $70. As for recoil proof I have no idea since your 454 is a whole lot more gun than my measly 357 magnum. Maybe a different model from this brand?
