a good dog died yesterday.
« on: June 15, 2003, 10:25:29 AM »
i had to put my dog down last night.   she was my best friend for 8 years.   looking through my guns i picked out my kimber 45 because i know i could put the bullet right were i needed it to go and i knew i could dump the rest in quick to make sure the job was done quick.   she was a rottweiler, and all i had on hand were 185 nosler hp's.   i would have prefered 230 ball but that is all i had.   although my heart is torn out,  i am happy to report that the 185's lived up to the task and i am sure she never knew what hit her; or seen it coming for that matter.    i wondered if a 45 would be enough to do it quick; so anyone else faced with a similar decision should know that it most definately is.

I had to put my own dog down once several years ago.  Used a 22 revolver.  Similar results.  Just about the hardest thing I've ever had to do.  In fact I don't think I could do it again.  Sorry to hear of your dog.

Sometimes the kindest things we have to do in this life are the hardest. The pain grows faint with time, but is always with you. Only a man without a soul would find this kind of task easy.

I think that Kipling (as so often) said it best

There is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
But when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your hearts to a dog to tear.

Buy a pup and your money will buy
Love unflinching that cannot lie -
Perfect passion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk you heart for a dog to tear.

When the fourteen years that nature permits,
Are closing in asthma, or tumor, or fits,
And the Vet's unspoken prescription runs
to lethal chambers or loaded guns,
Then you will find - it's your own affair
But - you've given your heart to a dog to tear.

We've sorrow enough in the natural way
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent
At compound interest of cent per cent,
For when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short time loan is as bad as a long -
So why in Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?

When the body that lived at your single will,
When the whimper of welcome is stilled
(HOW STILL!)
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone - wherever it goes - for good,
You soon discover how much you care,
And give your heart to a NEW dog to tear.

Myronman3,
I been there too, I feel for ya. It's a hard thing. Time does help, but so does a new pup. It's hard to think of going to get another one; but once you do it really does make things better.

Well, congradulations!  Remember, it's never to early to buy him/her some guns.  Lay-away plan or whatever.

I got two myself; they're grown up now.  They do grow up fast. One day they are in diapers, the next day they're boarding an aircraft carrier.

I made it a whole 10 days without a new pup after one of my dogs died.  Didn't want one for a while, but that changed quickly.

Good Old Dogs
« Reply #9 on: June 23, 2003, 08:55:40 AM »
My oldest is 12 and I'm hoping he will last another two years.  His younger brother is 10 but I wasn't so sure how long he would last after his brother died.  Separation anxiety in dogs can lead to an early death.  My oldest just had surgery and is recovering well.  But being concerned with the both of them becoming too sedate, or spoiled, I picked up a 3rd from a rescue shelter on Saturday.

My older guys are kind of wondering what the hay, but the three seem to be getting along with the youngest accepting his place in the 'pack'.  I'm glad I didn't wait until I had to get another and I think that even for an older dog this would help with the transition knowing that he wouldn't be leaving a younger brother all alone (to get all the treats and bones, etc).

As Shane said, he lasted 10 days before he got another.  I'm hoping that when the time comes it will be more natural for them and that there may not be so much grieving.  Mikey.

We don't get very many really GOODdogs in our lives. We have but time for 4 or 5. And a GOOD dog you don't find every day.
I'm almost 50yr. old,and I'm thankful that I've had 2,(sure enough good'uns) all their lives. There was a third but she was stolen in the middle of the night.

What you did was hard I know, but I've no doubt you did the right (&hard) thing.Time will ease but not completely erase the pain.I hope you find another good'un when you're ready for one.

Take Care. Jose'

but I've opted for parrots as pets.  Both of mine should out-live me.  I did lose one to an accident in my home a couple of years back.  It's damned hard losing a pet.

My heart goes out to you Myron.
